Does anyone use a portable harddrive with the Z that doesn't require external power, when used with the Z.

It's been discussed before, the consensus being basically, that the Z delivers just enough power for smaller devices, but usually not enough for a harddisk, though there could be ones which work.

So far however no one's identified such a drive explicitly, if I'm not wrong.

Is there a harddisk like that? I'd like to purchase it, but from the ones I've used so far, none would power on with just the current from the Z.

The question is does it require its own power supply or a powered hub? Or does it work with a single USB connection?

I have a non-branded 2.5inch disk but I need a powered hub.

The rapsody has an internal battery and works with a single USB connection. No need for a powered hub.

Wondering why you would go through the problems of finding a compatible external hard drive, when every USB stick I have ever plugged into the USB has worked fine, required no supplemental power, retains memory without power, seems indestructible, and costs so little these days.
2 months ago I "bought" a 4GB USB drive for $18, but there was an $18 rebate with it, meaning it was free, with free shipping. Can't beat that deal. techbargains.com is your friend.

The consensus is that Z don't have enough power for 2.5" drives but can power 1.8" drives. Apricorn makes very good 1.8" drives confirmed working with Z in the 6000L harware forum.

Anyone know if we could rip the drive from one of these and swap it for the 4Gb inside a 3000/3100? Even a 30Gb internal drive would keep me happy - but 100Gb would be awesome.

As you can see from my sig I have a pma430. It has a 30gb drive. On the archos sites you can find spares of all sorts including hard drives. I haven't looked too hard at the details, but this might be a possible source?

Harking back to the original post: I must see if the pma can be attached to USB host on my 3200 0r 6000. I should have tried that long ago!

I don't think so if it's a 1.8" drive. The Z's drive is 1 inch, unless I'm mistaken.

yup, the 3x00 has an internal microdrive, basically a hard drive the size of an over-thick CF card

The microdrive in 3000/3100 are 1" drives not 1.8".
