Questions about my "new" Z 5500
« on: March 12, 2004, 10:01:39 pm »
Hi, I just got my Z in the mail today. $122 on ebay. No instructions, CD, box etc... but it seems to work fine.

I have a couple of questions:
1. The battery was drained. I plugged it in and it seemed to be fully charged in less than 1 hour. Is that right?

2. The battery drained *very* fast. Do I need a new battery? Where can I get one?

3. One of the first things I did was capture a few minute MPEG1 video from a TV show. I copied it to my CF card and tried to play it.. It plays but rather choppy. How can I play video smoothly?
What is the best way of encoding video ?

4. This sounds really dumb, but the 5500 does not have a speaker for MP3 and video playback right? The headphone jack works fine..

5. I think it has the sharp 2.38 rom. Is there a ROM that is better for mp3 and video playback?

thanks,
ac

i think no rom can solve the problem of the poor video quality, its due to the 206mhz process in the 5500.

It may be dying, give it a while though and see whether it\'ll recover. If you don\'t use the backlight on full blast you get significantly more battery life BTW.

They are available on the web, etc., take a look in the deals bit of the forum, I\'m sure someone has got a link there.

Lots of threads about this, try searching for \'encoding video\' or similar.

With OZ (another ROM) you can use the piezo buzzer as a speaker but the quality\'s not stunning, best to stick with the headphones.

There are certainly better ROMs, 2.38 is rather old now. But whether they are better for video playback is not really as issue. I presume that more memory will make playback better in which case OZ is the way to go, however I think that using bewtter video playback software (and using specific encoding options) would probably help you more (I use mplayer). If you fancy hacking then go for OZ, if you want an easy introduction to the Z (this is probably recommeded) then I\'d recommed starting out with something like the theKompany ROM.
