Hooray~! I Installed Icewm On C1000
« on: August 25, 2007, 04:16:20 am »
I tried to use Korean locale on Angstrom.
and I had failed V~ery many times.

And Now, That's the result!!
That was Very, Very hard work.

Because Angstrom's GTK+, glib and IceWM have problems to using Asian Locales, I changed them. I used Debian EABI's glib, gtk+, icewm packages.

Now It fully supports Korean! I'm SO SO happy~!

안녕!
I'd be interested if you can maintain a web page with advices for using Asian languages in Angström.
I'm using Cacko now and only french/english (I'm french).

But I sometimes need to use Korean/Japanese/Chinese text (I was in Korea for the last year and will be going to China in february).

I'm not yet ready to switch to Angström but plan to do so one day or another because it seems to be the only ROM actively maintained nowadays.

pdaXrom is also actively maintained -- not just Angstrom.

hmm.. that seems unreasonable, especially in context.  PdaX has moved more slowly up the version numbers, but done better for readiness and useability on the Z, imho.  More, though--in context you seem to be disregarding openbsd, gentoo (and debian) as being developed, though they apparently run on the Z.
Of course I haven't tried angstrom since last spring, and that on the 6000.  Maybe we will see that nifty neo openmoko theme on a Z desktop soon?

No flame, but OpenBSD/Zaurus runs very well and is constantly and actively updated, and has authentic official support.

Koen, get a life. You are not God. You never will be. I've lost a lot of respect for you (if I ever had any) because of your ridiculous postings. Angstrom is a great distro, but it's not perfect. It can't even run Firefox. There are distros that are DIFFERENT than Angstrom. They are not necessarily better or worse. To each his own. I was merely offering up information on another distro. I could care less if someone uses Angstrom over pdaXrom. Really. I don't work for pdaXrom, and I don't get paid to promote them.

You need to grow up. You're like a spoiled little kid who needs to have everything your way or no way. You're alienating a large segment of the users here at OESF by posting comments like that. You could try helping instead of hindering for once in your life. You are flat out saying you are better than the pdaXrom developers -- and although you may not necessarily offend them (they are probably desensitized to your negative comments after hearing [reading] them so many times), you are one very rude person. I would be ashamed of myself if I were to post comments like that suggesting my superiority over others.

pdaXii13 is regarded by many as BETTER than Angstrom. I would not agree -- first, I've never used it or Angstrom, and second, it's probably different and not necessarily better -- but just because pdaXrom isn't bleeding edge like Angstrom doesn't make it crap.

And thank you adf and ZDevil for actually adding something to the conversation -- there seems to be a fair amount of work on OpenBSD/Zaurus and Gentoo (and a little on Debian).

Sorry for going a bit off-topic again.
I am actually not very much concerned about which distro or "ROM" is the ultimate choice, as long as it works and has enough support (esp. regular & consistent updates, documentations, package/port system).

I understand this may be hard to many devs. imho the best thing to do to prolong the life of Z is to get some standard Linux/Unix distros running on Z. We've already seen that distros like OpenBSD (already *officially* supported) and Debian (almost there, why not?) do run on Z without compromising much in performance, apart from some (not that much i reckon) tweaking/hacking work to be done.
And I have yet to be convinced of the big advantages of spending so much effort on building a homebrew OS from the ground up, rather than tapping into the vast resources of existing standard distros. I know i've said this quite a few times before but not many seem to be interested. Think about how the good old handheld PCs get liberated from the darn win ce, e.g. Jornada and Debian 720 degree.
Is this just purely a joke or is there some better reason not to do so? Please enlighten me.

ps. Back to the topic. Locales of icewm also work in pdaXrom and OpenBSD.

Oooops, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to disregard any distribution, it was only my (wrong) feeling.
I'm still interested in the instructions for Korean.

Ah...

For now, I can't see korean in some GTK 1.x applications-Dillo, XMMS, etc...
They don't support ttf fonts. I think I'll install some xfonts to use korean in these applications, but there's no xfont setting tools in Angstrom, and Debian's tools needs so many depends packages.(I have only 2MB free space in my rootfs)

But there's alternative. I can use minimo(slow and unstable) to see korean. And I'm thinking to take Debian EABI's Firefox. I think it will work.

And... for these topics, I think Angstrom, pdaXrom, and other ROMs have its own good and worse.
For Example,
Angstrom is faster and more stable than any other X Roms I have ever used. I waits only 4seconds to use XMMS. But I had difficulty using Korean, Web Brower, and multimedia applications.

pdaXrom, for beta 1~3, They're slow, But They have stable kernel, systems, and many applications.
And R series, They're as fast as Angstrom, but autodetecting CF/SD memory drives me crazy. And I felt a little unstability.

Debian-EABI, It's real Desktop Linux. I can use Z like Desktop. But It don't have busybox, so It's size is so big!

And Cacko rom, That's the true PDA-linux. It's for PDA. Have Convenient interface than any other ROMs, Stable, And have many programs designed for PDA. But the number of program is low, and can't change interfaces for one's own taste.

For me, I choose Angstrom for Speed, Stability. But for korean support, I choosed it because I thought I could fix them. And most of all, My own taste was Angstrom.
No one can say bad about my choice basically. Like that, I can't say bad to anyone. I just say some questions, advices, opinions, not critcism about their choices.

So, Don't fight about it anymore. It seems just like kids. We should respect each other.
