thanks to cacko/usb mass storage (muvo2)
« on: March 19, 2004, 05:23:56 am »
Hi All,

This is just a simple thank you to cacko for the rom and a little info about the muvo2.  Firstly, thanks cacko, the rom rocks and the usb mass storage stuff works perfectly.

I bought the creative muvo2 4gb player, tookout the microdrive and fdisk\'d it to a single large linux partition.  This worked easily but the usb mass storage wouldn\'t work.  I did some searching around and found that windows want\'s it in vfat for the format.

I deleted the partitions on the hd and added a primary partition of approximately a quater of the sectors (turned out to be 933mb).  I made this a win95 fat32 type partition.  Then an extended partition for the rest of the sectors, then a single logical linux partion.

I could mkfs.ext2 for the extended partition (/dev/hda5) but there were no mkfs.vfat tools.  Long story short if you set the usb mass storage option in the tool to CF then the primary partition (/dev/hda1) is mounted to windows.  It will say \"drive isn\'t formated would you like to\" and you say yes.  Wonderfully, windows formatted the drive in the zaurus over the usb mass storage module.  Now I can drag and drop files to the z without problem.

(To see both the partitions you must add a line in /etc/fstab to say something like /mnt/hdlinux for /dev/hda5  - copying the hda1 line is a good idea- and create the directory /mnt/hdlinux.  Then you can mount /mnt/hdlinux to see the other partition).  The only remaining problem is that I can\'t seem to automount both partitions, only the primary dos one is automounted.

I hope this helps people out with knowing it\'s safe to get the muvo2 (the ipod mini is 50 dollars more expensive and the hd from it doesn\'t seem to work) and how to get it working with the usb mass storage.

Thanks again cacko for putting this in the rom for all the clamshells
Chris

Well, my experiences were not at all that positive. Since I\'ve been trying the X11/Xpda ROMs I wrecked an SD card (t\'was a Sandisk, so this may have nothing to do with the ROM) and repetedly had problems with the CF card (not working in ext2, not being seen after a wake up when in Fat, having to save the data to the main machine and reformat it, newly formatted card not working (it was mounted, but it seemed empty)....

I\'ve reverted to the cacko-qtopia ROM, I miss X11 but the cards work.

I\'m sorry to hear that.  I\'ve been using the cacko x11 since december and I\'ve had no problems.  The sandisk SD seems to be badly made as you say.  I\'ve had no problems with my panasonic 512mb SD, fingers crossed.  But if the qtopia\'s work with it then maybe there is a problem with the rom that isn\'t being seen.  Can you document it further incase it helps cacko?
