Best Wifi?
« on: March 15, 2006, 07:01:45 pm »
I would like a 802.11b card, and I'm not sure what to get. I've also had problems with retailers, so I would like to hear recommendations. My criteria for the card are: plug and play (for pdaXrom beta 2), less than $80 (least important), strong, small, and easy compatibility with WPA Supplicant and Kismet. And I would like the retailer to have fast delivery and this item in stock. Thank you.

Any prism2 card will work. Insert, update firmware to 1.7.4 (or newer) to get WPA and rest is configuration of pdaX.

I'd recommend Ambicom WL110C.
Compared to the average prism card that I have tried such as Netgear or Dlink - it is slimmer, uses less power and has a better range.

you say the ambicom is not a the average prism, do you mean that the WL1100C has a prism v.2.5 chipset instead of a v.2 as i the case of a D-Link for example ???

Thanks for the link which contains some good information, but first hand experience can be just as valuable. I can report that the range on the Ambicom is better than the Netgear MA701 and the Dlink660W

Also, even though the Spectrum24 card is listed here as a Prism2.5 yet I would not recommend that for pdaXrom as it requires too many driver patches to work properly.

I have the Ambicom WL1100C-CF and it sucks.

Every time I try to put it in my Zaurus, it either either locks it up with that dam white screen or it or pretends to work for about 5 minutes and then locks up again.

I don't know if its my card or my Zaurus. I have had my Zaurus and my card for about 1 day now and this is not how I wanted my experience with this new toy to go..

I was just in the middle of installing a package .. and what happens? White screen + card just turns off..

I have to unplug my card out of my Zaurus to make the white screen go away..

i have a d-link dcf-660w that came with my collie (got it on e-bay).. it's freakin awful. somehow it permanently jacks up my SD cards. for a month or two i thought my zaurus was breaking my SD cards until i bought 2 more for dirt cheap on e-bay and started trying to diagnose the problem.

the collie uses a 2.4.18 kernel, though. i'm sure newer kernels have better support. or it could just be _my_ card that acts screwy. or it could just be that pdaxrom has a bad driver for it or something. i don't recall ruining any sd cards during the short period that i used the original sharp rom.
