Zaurus SL-C860 - Your comments please.
« on: June 03, 2004, 05:51:37 pm »
Hi to everyone.

This is my first posting here

I am a Zaurus user from Norway, and I\'ve been owning some kind of Zaurus since the SL 5000D was released. I am currently using a SL-5500 for some surfing and other not so intensive tasks.

After having tried all sorts of PDAs, from Palm to PocketPC and Sonys in an attempt to find the perfect unit, I ordered an SL-C860 from Japan earlier this week.
My main areas of use for this unit are as follows;

I want to use it for media storage in the field, as a unit to dump pictures on from my camera. The camera supports SD cards.

I would also like to use some kind of mapping application, preferably with GPS capabilities for when I drive around in Europe this summer.

PIM is becoming more and more important at work, and I would like to be able to sync with both Linux (Evolution) and Mac.

Last, but not least, I am dependant on a very compatible browser as the CRM system at work is web-based.

So, I am wondering what programs, and possibly also what ROMs, that will carry out the needed tasks in style...
Will the Sharp-ROM and the installed apps get the job done, or should I install some of the other ROMs?
Will the Cacko ROM make all apps built for Qtopia useless?

And, finally, does anyone know if there is a car-mounting kit that fits the SL-C860 without taking up the passenger seat of the car...

Any comments and information you might have is greatly appreciated!

Much complicated a post ou leave.

Breaking it down, alot of people seem to have GPS, but I don\'t know how they do it.

I have a 4GB microdrive and a 512MBSD card, so I could post my results of a full ptrasfer from SD to Microdrivr to help you decide on that aspect.

The c860 is SMALL.  Some serious vercro and it is mounted.  (although unsightly).  Ussually GPS mounts elsewhere so that is a non-issue.  I would hook the GPS to cig lighter and 860 to battery extender as 860 could get bricked (destroyed) when car starts and cig lighter surges to 20 volts...yep it had happeneed).

The unit has both Opera and netfront support (but I think opera is better IMHO) , but you will reallly need to try it...I would say you 5500 should be a good estimate and then just assume 4x the resolution.

As for syncing, I never synced to linux nt XP sync works fine wqith the right drivers.

(Helpful tip: When you post is so complex best to number the items and then people will tackle the item they know best and leave the rest).

OKAY and you GPSers, we got a new guy calling for help.  Post or be mena and throw him to the wolves (aka the search utility  )

Thanks for the reply.
And, sorry for a complicated post. It was written quite late...

What it seems like it boils down to is this:

1) What GPS solutions work. Is there an application that will make car-navigation in mainland Europe easier??
2) Is the Sharp-ROM and ok ROM to use, or should I go for one of the alternatives. I ask because I will not have much time to test this before going on the road in July.

Thanks in advance!!
