Getting D-Link DCF-660W wireless to work on SL-5600

I purchased a D-Link DCF-660W wireless compact flash card
for use with my SL-5600.  So far, I have not been able to
get it to recognize public hot spots.  I suspect I am missing
something simple.  Here is what I have done:

- I used the Network application to set up a new network
  profile.  I told it:
  x Wireless LAN - TCP/IP
  x Non-spec ESS-ID: \"ANY\"
  x WEP: disabled
  x TCP/IP: Obtain TCP/IP information automatically
  x DNS: Obtain DNS information automatically
  x Proxy: No proxy.
- I plugged in the card.  The system seems to see it and
  in the Network/Current tab panel, I see a MAC address.
- I tap on the \"world\" icon in the dock and ask it to connect
  with my profile.
- The D-Link card indicator light blinks slowly for about 30 seconds.
  During this period, I see an \"Access Point\" number of
  44:44:44:44:44:44 appear and the Signal quality reading
  says 52%.  But it never actually finds an access point and
  does not initialize successfully.

It certainly looks like the Zaurus is recognizing this card.  Do I
have to provide an ESS-ID and/or WEP for a public access point?
Could the card be flaky?  Any other ideas?  Thanks for any help.

Using Sharp 3.13 and all ok this end...

I\'ve actually been having that problem with my AmbiCom WL1100C-CF card..  not just public networks either, it also does that for my home network.

I\'ve tested it with Sharp Rom, tkcRom and Zynergy.. all the same problem

Are you sure it\'s a public access point??

44:44:44:44:44:44 is the IPaddress shown when the WiFi card can\'t associate with the access point.  The most common cause of this is that the AP is using MAC address control & will only associate with known cards.

AFAIK, signal quality setting is pretty meaningless until you are able to associate to the AP.  I\'ve seen the Network Settings applet show random values for signal strength from 15%-85%, with no AP around for miles.

The ESS-ID of \"ANY\" should work for most public APs, but I found that my DCF-650W only associates with my D-Link 614P at home if I set the ESSID to the actual ID (\"default\").

I\'m running a 660 on a 5600 using a Cisco 1200 AP, and it works 100% perfectly, in all variations of SID etc. The only thing that does seem to be a little flaky is the WEP implementation, so I\'d say leave WEP out of it completely! As a result, I\'m using MAC access control on my AP.

I\'ve been playing around comparing the DLink to Cisco 340 & 350 series and, while I can\'t really check throughput, ability to associate/sensitivity seems pretty much the same. I reckon doseas is right and you need a public AP....

Possibly worth mentioning that, even with the card recognised you do need to tell it to connect, as well, on insertion.

Well, I can\'t get the DCF-660W to work at all in my SL-5600.  I
am going to try purchasing another card.  This time, I am going
to try the SMC2642W.
