OpenZaurus / OpenEmbedded Confusion
« on: June 10, 2004, 08:34:54 am »
Hello Everyone,
I have a wonderfull SL-5500G and I\'m using OpenZaurus at the moment. But as my current ipkg version causes lots of trouble I wanted to upgrade to a newer, better operating system.

I\'ve heard that OpenEmbedded is in some way the successor of OpenZaurus, which seems to be regarded as deprecated by now. Unfortunatly I couldn\'t find any specific information about what OpenEmbedded actually IS, nor where I could possibly download it! The wiki at openembedded.org speaks more about OpenZaurus than about OpenEmbedded..

So my questions are basically:

What is OpenEmbedded? How can I use it, how can I help? Is it an operating system? Is it the succesor of and a valid replacement for OpenZaurus?

OpenEmbedded is a build enviroment used for next versions of Familiar, OpenSimpad, OpenZaurus (and few other projects).

Actually we have base system running and OPIE starting (here are problems with calibrating). If You don\'t want OPIE you can get GPE instead.

How use and help? Download, setup, build image and test it on Zaurus. You can add packages, fix those from in nonworking/ to build.

Thank your for the quick - and helpful - reply!

What do I get when I build a system with OpenEmbedded? A zImage and an initrd.bin which I would have to flash onto the Zaurus? Or is there a way to update \"on the fly\"?

Is it always possible to re-flash my Zaurus with a stable version or is it prossible to permanently damage it?

You will get initrd.bin and zImage - after reflash You will get OZ 3.5.1-pre1. OFcourse You can then reflash it with other version.
