Would I need to backup Hancomm/Java for Cacko ?
« on: July 31, 2004, 06:50:46 am »
Hi,

I'm thinking of trying Cacko 1.21b on my SL-C860 but I would like to know if you need to strip out the Hancomm and Java bits into IPKs before you start (like with OZ). I currently have the stock ROM which I'm more than happy with at the moment but it sounds like Maslovsky has done a lot of leg work towards making this a lot nicer (would be great to see some screenshots though.. pity that www.cacko.biz is still pointing at the PDAXROM stuff).

So based on what you get on a virgin SL-C860 ROM image with UK conversions does anyone know what you lose with a Cacko conversion (if anything) and if there are steps that are required to keep some of the stuff then are there any SL-C860 specific instructions (Some instructions relate to Jeode, SL-C860 has Sun Java Personal Profile).

Regards,

Andy

You don't need to do that, Hancom stuff is included in the ROM, Java is on your original CD which came with the Z.

As for what you loose, I only had the original ROM on for a few hours before wiping it, so I can't help here.  But you will loose the Japanese dictionary thing (I never tried it), I had a sample video preinstalled which is not on my CD, you'll loose that unless you copy it off first. Other core programs remain, included by default with 1.21b is a swap memory manager which is very useful, Kino2 video player, a terminal (not sure if that is there by default with the Sharp ROM), the media player from the 6000 is included with a GUI makeover and the ability to play OggVorbis files.  All the PIM stuff, hancom, help browser, standard music and video players are the same. There probably are more additions/removals but I can't remember anymore than that.

Sounds great, thanks for the response.

Oh BTW: do you know if the sync process is still the same (same Intellisync version) for this ROM as the stock Sharp ROM. Or would I have to downgrade to an earlier version of Intellisync ?

I know that earlier Sharp ROMs had a different sync process and was wondering if earlier sync stuff was ported from earlier incarnations of Cacko or if Cacko is based on th 3.10 ROM.

Any ideas ?

No it shouldn't be, different architecture to the 3.1x ROMs on the 5x00 machines.

But as for syncing, I've never sync'd in my life as I'm running Linux and don't use PIM apps. So I'm not able to advise there

Ah yes, sorry.

Was thinking in terms of the way that the ROMs had been developing. As I understand it the 3.10+ ROM versions for the 5500s use the newer Sync process that the SL-C860 1.10 stock ROM uses.

Previous versions used FTP on port 4242 for data transfer, newer versions of the ROM use SAMBA for data transfer. There are also some extensions to QCOP etc. in the new ROM - radically different sync process but with the Stock ROM the sync apps from the latest 5500 (CD-313.zip) work very well.

I therefore refer to the 5500 ROM to give the previous sync reference that never existed on the SL-C860 stock ROM.

So does anyone know if the Cacko 1.21b ROM syncs using the new or old sync process ?
