Trolltech releases Qtopia 2.1
« on: November 12, 2004, 04:06:39 pm »
Dear All,

Trolltech yesterday (November 9, 2004 noon Oslo time) announced the
release of Qtopia 2.1.

New features in Qtopia 2.1 include touch-screen phone support, full
handwriting input and new phone themes. Qtopia 2.1 allows the
development of customized, full-featured Linux-based mobile
devices. With the new touch-screen functionality, Qtopia 2.1 supports
the two primary types of input, touch-screen and key-based, with one
software package.

Qtopia version 2.1 extends Qtopia's flexibility with significant new
functionality including:

- Touch-screen phone support: Qtopia Phone now includes support for
touchscreen-based input, in addition to the key-based operation
  already supported.

- Full-screen handwriting recognition: Qtopia PDA and Qtopia Phone now
include customizable full-screen handwriting recognition to increase
  input flexibility.

- Enhanced theming: Qtopia Phone has a powerful theming engine, allowing
the user interface to be customized and personalized.

- Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS): MMS is now a part of Qtopia
Phone. It allows users to create and view MMS messages with images,
  text and audio content.

- GPRS: Qtopia Phone now supports the General Packet Radio Standard
  (GPRS).

- Reduced Minimum Flash Requirements: new build options enables even
smaller distributions of Qtopia on devices.

- Over the air configuration: Qtopia provides support for configuration
of the phone over the air.

So apart from the full-screen handwriting recognition, all improvements go to Qtopia Phone, right? Not much news then for us I think. Still, good luck to you guys with this release, hope you score more of the big boys like Motorola...

Any hope of using the phone functions with QT/embedded and something like this??
Good to hear you'll have ROM images available for the existing devices.
