I'm returning my SL-6000
« on: September 19, 2004, 09:14:44 pm »
So my quest for the Ultimate PDA continues.  My 6000 got shipped with a mini USB port that wouldn't bend back to fit the USB cable in, so I'm returning it to amazon.com.  My question is what should I go after next?

I loved the screen that the 6000 had.  Unfortunately, because there aren't any good cases with a belt clip, I've had to use the plastic protector that comes with the PDA which is getting scratched and smuged now.  I want to pay the same as my 6000 or less, have some great hardware, have accessories like a case with belt clip available, be able to sync with Linux via USB port, and use standards like pdf or text files and not Palm Database or anything like that.  What would you recommend (it doesn't even have to be a Z)?  I think on the Zaurus line, the C860 would be my choice, and I believe there's sync options for Linux too.  I don't care for wireless/bluetooth or the USB host that the 6000 provided.  I really like a nice screen, fast processor, and lots of memory.   Any suggestions?

i have to agree with jettie... i have a 760 and it's the best little handheld ever.  I *really* like the clamshell over the 5x00/6000 models.

Totally agree.

C860 is FAST and great (once you set everything up the way you want).

Not knoing what you want to do makes it harder to say whether it will fit the bill for you.

I had a 5500. but even without 4x the resolution, I would get the c860 just for the keyboard !

400Mhz CPU (easily overclockable) and 200Mhz bus makes this baby scream.

Only slow app I ran accross was MAME....and that is most likely do to lack of Z optimizations.

Only two wishes for Z (that I can live without) are SDIO (in progress) and suspend On CLose option (which may be in the next release of CackpQT).

Movies Rock, Music, PIM, NES EMU, SNES EMU, Native games, Java, Linux , dual expnsion, clamshell, full keyboard, Microdrive compatible (I Love having 4GB and then SD 1 GB !!) WIFI, Email , Web, OpieReader (Z4CK !!!) ,  Swivel capability (not much use for that for me though), backward compatible with tons of 5500 stuff,  and of course, the best part of all ZUG....The only down side to the Z that I can see is that it was made by Sharp....a company, that in my opinion has don everything to alienate the very people trying to make this a success (users and developers).

Not that it matters now, since you already returned the 6000, but...

The USB cable that ships with the 6000 is mini-B, which fits the docking base.  The USB port on the Zaurus itself is mini-A.  All you had to do, dude, was buy the appropriate additional cable.

From other threads here at zug, I found and purchased a Goldx 5 in 1 Quick Connect USB Cable Kit, which does the trick quite nicely.

cheers and God bless,

D'oh!    And we sell those cables at work too.  The port on the cradle looked so similiar to the one on the Z.  Silly me for expecting Sharp to do something easy and use the same port on both.
