New pdaXrom install, now what?
« on: October 12, 2004, 08:51:04 am »
Hi,

Just installed pdaXrom onto a SL-C860; I understand I can now install applications on it via package files, which would be fine if I knew how to transfer files onto the darn thing.

From my googling, it seems that one can run sshd on the server, run a USB network device driver on the client machine, and then you can scp the files over.

This is fine and dandy, but how I *get* the openssh package over to the machine is going to be an interesting feat.

The only connectivity I have is USB.  No CF compact flash card, no wireless card, and I won't have those for a few weeks at least.

How can I do it?

if you're talking about RC5 or similar then setup usb network. Setup a ftp server / webserver on your desktop and connect to that.
Gorgeous C860, 256 Sandisk SD, 1Gig Pretec 40x CF, PDAIR leather case & the really cool retractable iPDA USB sync/charge cable. Powered by PDAXROM BETA 1.

My wish - to have a Command & Conquer style game on my Z! (FREECNC!!!) Simcity 2000 would also be great.

Managed to figure it out shortly after I posted, sorry I only just saw your post now.

You've only given half the clue - I didn't realise 'ipkg' actually invoked wget on trying to get a http:// or ftp:// url.  I couldn't see any binaries that would let me transfer a file onto the system, or any daemons capable of it (there's references to an ftpd in /etc/inetd.conf, but tcpd or ftpd don't exist).

I booted into Linux, ran usbnet, ran a web server, and sucked down things that way.  Seems to work well.

yes, wget is a life saver...  I use to dl the entire feeds to a local cf/sd -- but the feeds
are getting quite large... now just package manager to the straight feed is good
enough (unless going offline)
