Is there a way to make the Zaurus see Japanese apps in English instead of squares?

I think you need the qpe-language application. . . it will allow you to set English as the default language.  If you have it already, switch to English and most apps should come up in English.

Otherwise, you just have to do a little editing on the .desktop files.
