Launcher Keys
« on: October 11, 2004, 10:51:52 am »
I also posted this as a feature request on the bug reporting system

I'm not entirely clear on the reason why the launcher keys were used for Ctrl/Alt rather than the two Japanese keys that the Cacko ROM uses.

Surely it would be far more favourable to use the launcher keys to launch appropriate applications and wake up the machine as they were intended to do.

I'm sure that I'm not the only one that finds it an overpowering limitation that there are some very prominent useful keys that could be used to call up the now available PIM applications but they don't do it !

It would be good to know if I'm not the only one that thinks this would be a great feature to have back.

BTW: GPE does do this (at least on iPAQ/Familiar) with it's own light weight Calendar/Addressbook bits which load quite promptly. - I think get the PIM stuff far more useable and there would be a much bigger draw to move - Oh and the GPE source tree includes MultiSync modules for the GPE PIM apps but you need to put a modified version of sqlite on the unit for the sync to work - the GPE apps store everything using sqlite as standard.

Don't get me wrong I really like the interface on KO/PI and KA/PI, it's just a little slow at loading and getting to your items.

Cool!,

Can't remember from my test the other day if these keys still woke up the Z but I'm assuming that if you are going to allow them to be application mapped then that's a given.

BTW: Wakeup on alarm has gotta be a feature for PIM stuff - haven't looked at your developer stuff but do you provide a timer wakeup API for PIMs to queue such events ?

I used to use the two japanese keys as CTRL and ALT but I actually prefer Calendar & Address because I feel they are in a more convenient location.  I'm all for the keyboard layout util though - I think it will be great when we can remap the keys to suit our own personal tastes.

Sorry don't have the link at the moment, but I've posted before with an alternative /etc/X11/kb/corgi.modmap that maps the japanese keys to ctrl and alt (And easy enough to work out from that and /etc/xdg/openbox/rc.xml how to map applications).

Hi :-)

@rgrep

Yes I think too ... apps keys cal + addr are in better position (and bigger ones) for mapping to ctrl alt keys but in future it will be nice to have apps keys again ...

@laze
... any news about the key config tool ?

... any idea when kathrin 1.1.0 rc6 or final cvomes up :-)

Thanks a lot
Martin
