I would probably trust Hitachi microdrives the most.  The drives have generally gotten very good reviews.  Since Hitachi acquired IBM's hard drive division a couple years ago, they've pretty much been in the microdrive business the longest.

I have the 4GB Hitachi model and it has been working great so far, and doesn't seem to be much more of a drain on the battery than a traditional solid state CF card.

Hope this helps.

the one microdrive you should __avoid__ is magicstor. i have a magicstor2.2GB and it drains out the batteries very very fast. the microdrive doesnt work well for my camera as well (cannon 300D) with the same problem.

cheers

Power consumption for a Hitachi 4 gig is 305 mA at +3.3 V, while solid state cards are about a fifteenth of that.  Do these devices enter standby modes on their own, or do they just suck juice while they're mounted? I'm planning on a big trip soon, so I'm curious as to how long you can go between recharging the Z with the Hitachi Microdrive if you have the Z on constantly. I guess I could do the calculations myself, but I'm lazy and am happy with a subjective opinion.

I bought a Seagate 5GB microdrive and formated it ext3, it needs frequent re-insertions to get it to work.  I can't save my email there like I could on my cf card, all in all I'm not really sure yet, this weekend I may unlock it's secrets and be perfectly happy, but right now, I'm not sure.

If I get good results, I'll give it a thumbs up... for now, it's thumbs sideways.
SL5500 (Broken Screen, but still works)
SL6000L (Needs Sled, will pay $250)
64MB SanDisk CF (FAT16)
5GB Seagate Microdive (ext3 Flakey, sent back)
4GB Hitachi Microdrive (Fat16) replaced flakey 5GB Seagate
1GB Pq1 SD Card (Fat16)
