Wlan-ng.conf Missing?
« on: December 11, 2004, 06:25:54 am »
Hi
Many thanks to all for providing such a great resource.

Quick intro:
My name is Dave (aka sandtreader) and I've just a bought a sl5500 from ebay. This unit is soooo cool, but of course you all know that.

OK, I'm using Sharp Rom 3.1 and I'm trying to setup my cf wifi card. The card is a nl-25511 (purchased from ebuyer.com for about £20).
At present the card is not being recognised. I know the card is good (been tested in other win based pda's, and indeed OZ recognised - but why I switched back to Sharp is another story).
To cut a long story short, I've run cardctl ident (following instructions from this great site) which returns some info which I believe I need to append to /etc/pcmcia/wlan-ng.conf - my problem is I don't seem to have this file!
Now, I'm pretty sure I'm being really dense here, but after doing a ls wlan-ng* of /etc/pcmcia I have:

wlan-ng
wlan-ng.opts

I backed up these files and edited wlan-ng (hoping that this may be the configuration file!) and appended a new entry (the manfid was obtained from the result of cardctl ident):

card "Ebuyer WIFI Card"
   manfid: 0x000b, 0x7100
   bind "prims2_cs"

rebooted Z and inserted card - still no joy.
I guess I'm worried that I've ammended the wrong file. Is there a sample wlan-ng.conf someone could post here please?
Apologies for being so thick, and thanks in advance to anyone who can help this (embarrassed) newbie.

Kindest Regards

Dave (sandtreader)

Update: reflashed & file is there (must have stuffed up somewhere).
Z recognizes card now, but still struggling to connect.
Will post my findings when I've resolved this, as this card could be a real bargain for Z owners.

Dave.

Wehey! got it working

Apologies if this is boring, but this may help someone else.
Here's how I got my cheap cf wifi card (nl-25511) from ebuyer  (QuickFind: 50919) working on my Z sl5500 running Sharp Rom 3.10

1. card wasn't being recognised by the Z, so ran the command 'cardctl ident' which retuned:

Socket 0:
  product info: "WLAN", "11Mbps_PC-Card_3.0", "ISL37100P", "Eval-RevA"
  manfid: 0x000b, 0x7100
  function: 6 (network)
Socket 1:
  no product info available

I was then able to append /etc/pcmcia/wlan-ng.conf with the following entry:

card "NL-2511CF"
  version "WLAN", "11Mbps_PC-Card_3.0", "ISL37100P", "Eval-RevA"
  bind "prism2_cs"

Restarted Z, inserted card which was then recognised
Setup network (wep etc.) using the Network applet - still no joy
Logged into my router which confirmed that the Z was trying to connect (identified by mac address in the active mac's table). Remebered that I'd restricted access to my network by filtering on mac adressses - added in the mac addr for the wifi card and wehey, got connected (yyyeeeeeeeeeesss!)

This card seems like a real bargain (about £20-ish). The connection seems solid and I've been able to receive a stong signal from different locations in the house.
Highly recommended.

Sorry to waffle on

Dave.
