Xwindows Crashing
« on: January 21, 2005, 11:45:41 am »
I have installed RC8 and get the xwindows, but when I exit I cannot get
it to work again. No matter what I do the xserver crashes with the following
message:
Quote
[w100fb] set 640x480 (VGA 90 degree)

waiting for X server to shut down set_power_state: what=256 state=0
send_event: event=0

If I say: startx -bg red
or use any sensible option, I get a white xterm covering the left upper corner of an
otherwise grey screen; nothing else. I am completely lost as to why this is the
case.  Since I suspect that maybe something with the system is not ok, I give
you the full dmesg. Please have a look. I am not a linux or unix expert, just an
experienced user.

Xwindows Crashing

I have tried startx -bg red.

I think X is starting without a window manager, maybe because of the options you pass to startx.

I get an xterm with which ever colour I specify.  I can exit and restart this or the normal startx command at will.

Simon.

OK, but when I issue "startx" it comes up and then crashes. I do not pass any
options (as far as I am aware of). How can I prevent this? How can I get the
normal nice gui?

Marcus,

This happens when you start X as root, or with an other user as you mention in one of your other post?

X starts an then crash with startx -bg red?
but not startx only?

What happens is this: when I try this as root, I get this breakdown. I have installed
RC8 and added a user upon which I got the gui for me as user but not for me as
root. Then I started to have problems with it and decided to flash the ROM once
again. Currently, I have only root as a user, and startx crashes. More precisely: if
I enter "startx" I get a grey screen for a while and then it disappears leaving me with
the messages I gave you, which are unrevealing. If I enter "startx -bg red" or
"start -vb" or any other acceptable option added, then I get the white xterm
(without top bar ror anything) at the upper left corner, the rest of the screen is
grey. That's it. It does not crash but is dysfunctional. There are no icons, no
sidebar or anything.

Markus, what Z do you have?

Maybe you use previous partition for root that is too small? I think the requirement for
the root size is bigger now that it was before.

Could you try df in a console to see if you have enough space?

I got the same message you have, except that everything is working.

pgas,

thanks for the hint. I resized the root partition to 121 MB and from then on it worked
perfectly. Though I should say that my experience has brought to light a number
of weak spots of RC8. First, the recommended 50MB are not enough (I used df and
/ was 98% full). This should be changed in the menu, I am sure it will confuse more
people.

Before that I had tried 121MB but then also added myself as a user.  Then Xwindows
would crash for me as user, and be very ugly for me as root (this has been described
by others as well). So I went to 70MB but had other problems there, most prominently
the password utility did not work properly. That said, I am now trying out 121MB root
partition, single user, me as root. So far it worked fine, and it is actually faster than
1.0.5. Many thanks!

Sorry to bring it up again ... but xwindows crashes again after reboot.
I am desperate for help!!! I am not a unix/linux programmer and I am
clueless about the source of the problem. I have flashed several times,
and Xwindows would work initially, and then when I exit for whatever
reason or reboot, it gives me trouble by crashing.

I use C860, with RC8. Here is what info I can give, since pgas mentioned
this earlier:

# df
Filesystem              1k-block Used Available Use% Mouted on
/dev/mtdblock/2   123904   62924  60980    51% /
none                          12288           16  12272      0% /dev/shm
/dev/mmcd/disc0/part1
                                  983580        614560  319056 66% /mnt/card

Once again I give you a listing of the boot-messages. I suspect that
they are important, since the system displays odd behaviour such as
forgetting that I set a root password. It also complained about failure
to determine hostname. Xwindows, when up, runs ok.

I am still trying ...

I issued "X > /tmp/x.out 2>&1"

and then killed the Xserver and listed /tmp/x.out. Here is what it says:

Quote
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/, removing
from list!
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpt/,
removing from list!

Any clues as to how to avoid the crashing of Xserver?

I've check to find any differences, but all message are about the same on my 860.

X crashes when you start it with startx? It crashes after a while when you uses it? what are
the symptoms?  is it crashing or  is it freezing?

Pgas,

I was able to run xdm, so X is not the problem. Moreover, I used the settings
in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc instead of root's .xinitrc. That workd, but it did not g
give me back the screen of pdaXrom. It seems to me to have to do with the
settings, but I might be wrong. I tried /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.openbox, but
that one was not as nice. I dsend below the .xinitrc that did *not* work. I
tried renaming the files in .matchbox/ but with no success. Maybe you
have an idea.

Many thanks,

                     Marcus

rename your .xinitrc to .xinitrc.old

in a new .xinitrc put
Code: [Select]
exec xterm
Then try one by one what is called in the original .xinitrc:

/usr/bin/chkhinge
openbox &
matchbox-desktop `cat $HOME/.matchbox/mb-desktop-background` &
matchbox-panel --no-flip --orientation south &

And the one before (lightandpower etc...) until you find something that doesn't work.. .

And see if something does not work

I did as you say. At the end I get a grey screen with an aterm. Nothing more. If I leave out
the exec xterm the again the grey screen stays for three seconds and then X crashes.
Can someone perhaps give me their .xinitrc? Juts to be able to test it. There seems to
be a problem with openbox, but I can't tell where to look for it.
