Lost My Symlinks
« on: December 23, 2004, 12:59:11 pm »
After installing many ipks, the c3000 became so slow I couldn't get a terminal open to see what was going on. I decided to do a reset (the button in the battery compartment). On reboot, I got an hdd3 error. I booted again and got a hdd1 error. Using the diagnostic menu to get to a terminal I found I had lost all my symlinks between /dev/root and hdd1. Now I'm back to the hdd3 error. I hit ctrl-C and the boot process continues until the wait...5 message appears. It is caught in an endless loop presumably because it can't find the files it needs due to no symlinks.

Elsewhere in this forum it was stated that using the "OK" menu choice 3 -> choice 1 would reset the links. Not for me. I tried choice 2 as well but I think it's just a fsck.

1.
I've reformatted my hdd3 with vfat (tried ext3, too) and it mounts cleanly with "hddmount rw".
When the boot process tries to mount it I get "invalid argument". Any ideas what's going on?

2.
I've looked everywhere. Is there a script in the configuration files that sets up the symlinks? If somone could do a find on the links and send it to me I would appreciate it. What's the file /etc/firstime all about?

3.
How can I get the Sharp boot loader screen to scroll so I can see what's going on?

This is so much fun!!

I've learned a lot since I posted that last entry. My HDD is back to normal, but I've messed up my NAND. I'm hoping someone can send me a copy.

When I've recovered my C3000 I'll post the details of how I did it.

when I'll receive my c3000 I plan to make a NAND/HD backup of it (hoping it'll work with a 4Gb microdrive in CF slot) so I will then be able to send it to you if you haven't found it yet . If you find it in the meantime please let me now I would be interrested getting it too
SL-C3000 - pdaXrom 1.1.0Beta1
SL-C860 - pdaXrom 1.1.0 RC8 (charging circuitry dead :( )
CF RamStar 512 Mb / Hitachi 4Gb microdrive (thanks to creative's muvo² :p)
SD Sandisk 1Gb / Viking 256 Mb
Linksys WCF13 CF wifi card

Anyone willing to donate for my work, please consider donate to pdaXrom and/or OE/OZ projects instead, I wouldn't have been able to do anything without them ...

Sorry for posting in two different places. I thought I had two different problems.

I've created a HOWTO on restoring a C3000 from scratch.
Other than hardware problems, there should never be a need to send it back for reflashing.
I hope it helps.
