Applications That Do Not Work
« on: January 18, 2005, 07:54:01 pm »
Hi I am using pdaXrom 1.0.5 and I have downloaded a few applications, some
of which unfortunately do not work:

AbiWord: I get absolutely no fonts, everything is just question mark.
Sunclock: Nothing much happens, the screen remains blank.
Gnumeric: simply does not start
Ethernet: my thernet card does not work with the rom. It is a standard brand,
and claimed to work fine with Unix devices.

Since the documentation is scant it may be that someone has forgotten to
mention dependencies or any obvious things to do. In any event I am stuck.
Any suggestions for help?

Are you installing from the right feed? see feed changes.

Anyhow, my suggestion is to install RC8, it is simply a better version.

Hopefully - I have been using pdaxrom.org as always.

Well, I might change to RC8, but the question is whether I'd loose all my
data and have to reconfigure the whole system or whether the tran-
sition is a simple update of the ROM. I have been reading the posts
and I could not quite make out whether or not it was worth and easy
to change. Moreover, some applications I guess will not work under
RC8 either. The missing fonts with AbiWord and the blank screen for
sunclock seem to be problems of the .ipk, ie missing data. (I went
to the site of sunclock and encountered a lot of missing data there
as well; seems not to be well maintained recently.)

As for Abiword, I can assure you the stable package works for 1.0.5 -- maybe you need to intsall the fonts package? I have used it on 1.0.5 and it worked fine for me, fonts included.
All your other problems seem like they can be solved without too much work, if you have basic linux skills. For example, if you insert your ethernet card, type dmesg and look at the messages, it should say whether or not it loads a driver for it, or report any problems encountered. From there on you can go on, analyising the problem.

If you need any realtime assistance, drop by on irc.freenode.net, #cacko, and I (and others) will be glad to help you troubleshoot.
pgas is right though, RC8 is much nicer. I'm not sure what user settings you are referring to, but most of it can be backed up and put back after reflashing, which is preferred over just upgrading the packages, though that should work as well.
