Tried that mine just keeps popping off. It has now gotten to the point that the metal pins for the screen have broken the plastic that held them in place due to the plastic not being able to handle the weight. So make sure you leave that metal hinge on your Gemini or yours will become like mine. https://imgur.com/a/WoB6I8F

here are some fun one's. Sorry they are from the google Play store but could be found elsewhere

This one is still in Alpha and is getting updated to fix the issues they are finding but is ok for a 2 minute time waster. It is a really bad attempt at pay to win gaming but I grew up playing Command & Conquer.

This is the one that has caused my Gemini to overheat due to me playing for 8 hours on a Saturday.

https://support.indiegogo.com/hc/en-us/arti...rn-ref-ent-trus

I do sympathise with people who were less lucky, it's not entirely Planet's fault about the X25 vs X27 thing, but really, we received everything that mattered in the original Indiegogo campaign, and the x25 vs x27 doesn't actually matter.

So x25 vs x27 deosn't actually matter to you I bet because you got the x27. While I know backing a project means you get a work in progress I have backed multiple projects that then fix and add things based on the backers opinions. But everyone got the same item with the same hardware in it. When the project creators were ready to launch version 2 many of us returned to back them and most were kind enough to reward us for it. Also the first 1000 backers were to get the x25 but then Planet had issues with keyboards and they then skipped over some of the first thousand backers and just went on down the line passing out the x25. I was not among the first 1000 but was Order ID 1115, Order Date March 3, 2017. So as I said before I am waiting to see how planet is going to fix this as My Gemini's right USB-C port is not working with the HDMI adapter that was sent with it from planet.

QUOTE(Dr. Watson @ Jun 13 2018, 04:03 AM) *
If you want to use the Gemini like a USB stick or a CD drive, I have just successfully tested DriveDroid which allows for that.
I was able to download an Ubuntu ISO, present it to the PC via DriveDroid as a virtual USB storage device and boot my PC into Ubuntu.
It's even much faster than using a CD drive.
Since I need to use different boot media regularly, I really appreciate that the Gemini supports DriveDroid. My previous phone didn't.
Saves me a lot of time creating USB boot sticks or burning DVDs from downloaded ISO images.
This is about as useful to me as a swiss army knife.

If your intention is to transfer files between the Gemini and a PC that doesn't speak MTP:
Two operating systems can normally not mount the same file system at the same time. It's like two people simultaneously writing on the same line on a piece of paper.
That means that previously the "sdcard" file system had to be unmounted on the Android side, terminating all apps that were accessing any files or folders at that point, so that the PC was able to cleanly mount the filesystem without corruption and interference. Android apps had to "wait" until the PC unmounted the sdcard before they could access the sdcard again.
This was a very unreliable and dissatisfying mechanism.
Apart from that Windows could only handle NTFS and FAT file systems. Both had limitations which made them unsuitable for the Android system. I won't even mention the licensing issues.

Current android uses a linux file system which is less prone to corruption, supports files>4G, stronger security and encryption.
MTP is the protocol that acts as an intermediary between the Android operating system/apps actively "working" on this linux file system and the PC wanting to read and write files.
Not a bad solution in my opinion. It minimizes conflicts, allows apps to keep doing what they are doing and reduces corruption to practically 0.
The only disadvantage is that the OS on the PC has to support MTP. But any sufficiently recent OS does ...

Other alternatives for transferring files:
-USB C SD adapter
-Install DroidSSH and copy files from Windows with WinSCP over WIFI. Or any sftp client.
-TotalCommander Wifi Plugin
-TotalCommander LAN Plugin to copy files from the Gemini to and from your PC over WIFI
-USB Tethering and DroidSSH + WinSCP
-Google Drive
-ADB
...

Thank you for sharing the DriveDroid app, it is just what I needed.

Well... mea culpa!
After ranting above about not being told, today, among some random papers, I found a letter that came with my Gemini, clearly stating that in order to not cause further delays, my Gemini (presumably the entire first batch) was made without e-SIM support. And yes, I've read it before. How close I was to send an angry email, and appear as a complete idiot.
[attachment=6099:esim.png]
When I read about the issue above, I first got the impression PC decided to not support e-SIM on specifically the X25 Geminis, but as PC supposedly didn't even know X25 units were made, how could they then tell the factory to make them differently? They didn't. It rather seems they told the factory to leave the e-SIM out of first batch because of other issues. That the same batch also is the one in which the factory used the wrong SoC seems to be an unrelated coincidence.

If the letter came with the Gemini then what good did it do? Mine did not come with a letter and Planet did not post it on Indiegogo under the updates. So to me they sent something different then what I backed for. I understand the screen size and battery size changes because they applied to all the Geminis but to be sent a Gemini that does not have the items that caused you to back it is Bs. I am waiting to see How planet is going to fix this for the backers who speak up about this.

I went ahead and tried it, I guess things went as expected. Process:

copy Gemini_Dual_Boot.txt as Gemini_Dual_Boot_Rooted.txt
edit Gemini_Dual_Boot_Rooted.txt: replace "boot.img" with "patched_boot.img"
follow Flashing instructions, except that un-check all the boxes except "boot", and use Download Only option.

Flash device, boot: now it's rooted.

Can't see that I would have lost anything in the process; software and accounts remain on Android side, and Debian side seems the same also.

Are there "official" or recommended ways to root the Gemini? So far, I was recommended Magisk, but not specifically for Gemini.

From the Gemini Firmware :" Rooted Android firmware
With Gemini you have the option to easily root your device. Please bear in mind that rooting an Android device comes with associated risks, and some application might not work correctly. You can search the Internet for more information, we suggest that you proceed only if you know what you are doing.
If you know what you are doing and you want to continue, then you can use the "Gemini_Android_Rooted.txt" scatter file to flash the rooted Android firmware. Please complete the process by installing Magisk Manager"

So since this is from Planet it is for Gemini.

Maybe someone is interested: "MTK engineering mode" can be downloaded from Google Play (or other sources). This Application allows you to run Advanced Setup from Engineering Mode Menu of MTK phones, also called SERVICE MODE. It will work only on MediaTek based Phones. Use the secret menu carefully. If you don't know what you are doing... don't do it!!

Bye for now Fred

No need I was able to just dial *#*#3646633#*#* and was placed into engineering mode. without downloading any apps to my Gemini.

Can you try again using the CamScanner App https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?...er&hl=en_US This app can fix issues with the text looking blurry and adjust lighting, it also will allow you to crop the picture so you only get the document you want. That is if the app will work with the camera. Thanks for posting the pictures still waiting to receive mine. How is the case for the camera add on?

I seem to recall them saying something like "We haven't been able to implement eSim on the first units (don't think there was any mention of X25, think it was before they were aware of that) YET, and chose to ship them now rather than wait until we got it solved". So the "the X25 CAN'T get eSim" is only mentioned in passing later. And if it is true it should be a reason for Planet to get new units from the manufacturer (and not just an apology...), and thus getting replacement units to the backers as well, at least in my opinion (not that it would carry to much weight, as it is only my opinion...).

That would seem reasonable, though I'd prefer repair over replacement, as tossing an otherwise working (I hope) device would be rather wasteful. What really distresses me, is that I had to learn about this from a forum. Why did they not tell the truth openly?

To the best of my knowledge, eSIM support has always been in the published target specification, first with the X25, then with the X27, and now in the final specification on the web site. Planet Computers told me my X25 4G Gemini would perform as well as the X27, but not, as far as I know, that it would have a broken eSIM. If true, Planet Computers has knowingly, without my consent, sent me a defective unit, and may have explanations to do, motherboards to fix and a reputation to repair.

The Gemini Early-bird Special
The Gemini PDA keyboard mobile device with WiFi and 4G connectivity. $250 off the final retail price exclusively for our Indiegogo backers. You will get your unit from our first production run. No units will be available for general release until you receive your Gemini. Early-bird Special ships in November 2017.

So I went back to see what was said about the Gemini I backed. And no where did I find anything saying that I would be receiving an eSIMless variant of the Gemini or that I would be getting the X25 variant of the Gemini. PC needs to correct this since they are shipping out variants of the Gemini and never informed anyone that there would be variants of the Gemini.

What brightness do you have your screen at? Mine is amply bright at about 20-25%. You could also go to auto brightness as well. Unless you are running heavy duty games, then the screen will always be the biggest user of power. Network/GPS don't help, but the screen trumps them all. Turn the screen brightness down and get an instant battery boost smile.gif

I had it set for auto but have now set it for 25% and my battery is lasting longer.

Not yet in the USA, so I decided to go ahead and back the Gemini since it had an eSIM in it. Not many of the carriers here want to support a phone that can easily be swapped to another carrier.

4G Gemini users using x25 chip (early release Geminis) should download the 4G Gemini x25 firmware. Finally, the Gemini 4G x27 users should download the 4G Gemini x27 firmware. If you are not sure about your Gemini version, just check under Settings → Wireless & networks. If you see a menu called SIM cards, then you have an x27 Gemini, otherwise you have an x25 Gemini.”

So Why is it that the X25 does not have the second sim card?

Hi, thanks for the comment. The eSIM feature is exclusive to the x27 variant of the Gemini and it's a design/compatibility choice. -E

Then my unit needs to be swapped because I was under the impression the Gemini came with an eSIM and due to the screw up by PC some Gemini's shipped with the X25 chip. This is not right I worked just as hard for my money as the next person and to get a model that is lacking for the same price as one that has a better CPU and an e SIM is not leaving a good impression with me. No were was it said that there was going to be different models of the Wi-Fi +4G Gemini ..

QUOTE(Grench @ May 1 2018, 11:50 AM) *
There is confusion between language translations over the term, 'lanyard hole'. Apparently there is an assumption that this must be for hanging an object around the neck and could serve no other worldly purpose.

That is not quite the case - the term, 'lanyard,' is far more generic than that.

lan·yard
ˈlanyərd/Submit
noun
a rope threaded through a pair of deadeyes, used to adjust the tension in the rigging of a sailing vessel.
a cord passed around the neck, shoulder, or wrist for holding a knife, whistle, or similar object.
https://www.google.com/search?q=define+lanyard

So, a 'lanyard hole' is merely a notch suitable for running a connecting strap or line through.

The Pandora has a 'lanyard hole' that many of us have connected a wrist strap to. My wrist lanyard has saved my Pandora on multiple occasions and makes one handed use possible. When I first suggested adding this to the Pandora during it's development, there were similar jokes about, "Why would you want to wear this around your neck?"

The Pyra will also have a lanyard hole in the plastics. Nobody that I'm aware of has any plans to hang it around their neck.
See the last image in this post for how this works:
https://pyra-handheld.com/boards/threads/te...13#post-1419559

Where the Gemini lacks this attachment point, I may get out a drill and add one. A 1mm hole drilled ~3mm in from the left edge of the hinge kickstand flap should be a solid enough attachment point for something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B010Z9P4OC

And suddenly the reviewers chants of, "can't use it one handed!" become irrelevant.

That will be a bad spot to place it. As the hinge on mine keeps popping off.

Though I've yet to hold one in my hand, I'm not certain I could use it as a daily driver phone, 4G or not. The thought of opening it up to find numbers to call strikes me as cumbersome and could make dropping it easier.. The candy bar phones of the Nokia Communicator series all had two screens to solve this issue. But I'm only working with a hypothesis since I don't have a Gemini.

Jake

Don't forget that android is able to do voice calling how well it does it depends on you and the headphones you use. I did not have a hard time placing calls because there is only 5 people I need to talk to and they are listed under speed dial. If I needed to talk to anyone else in my contacts list it takes longer due to having to swipe the screen. T mobile on my Gemini bounces between 4G, 3G and 2G so that causes the battery to drain quicker. So if you have the cash I would say grab one now because I do not see the demand growing for the Gemini fast enough for PC to bother with a Ver. 2 of the Gemini. I hope I am wrong about that because as soon as PC offers one I will back for one if they add the backlighted keybord.

Something I haven't heard mentioned and have no idea about, though it could affect how quickly we get our gadgets: How long does it take the various carriers to certify a device for use on their networks? According to one of the video interviews with Janko during CES, this was yet to happen. (I wondered if part of the batch of 20 taken to CES had been set aside for this purpose.)

Anybody know what's involved in this?

The carriers would have to carry the Gemini and none do. If they did you would receive a Gemini loaded with the carriers bloated software. The Gemini's were tested by placing the carrier's sim cards into the Gemini and using it. Other then that nothing else was done so when or if you have issues your carrier will inform you that the Gemini is not an approved certified device.

I think I will pull the trigger and buy direct from Planet and put up with the long wait. Hadn't known there were scalpers, but I try to buy new computers if possible. Plus, Planet deserves the business.

I've tried to monitor hardware issues and it appears the keyboard has been the big one, though users in certain countries have complained of dropped calls.

Jake

I had one of the first production run Geminis and now have one of the second (for reasons that are far too dull to go into again). If my replacement unit is anything like representative of the second run then you can cross concerns about the keyboard off your list of reasons not to buy. The first one was nice though not perfect, the new one is an absolute joy.

Rosie

Hello Rosie. I am glade to see that PC sent you a replacement. I have T-Mobile and am in Washington state. The Gemini works as a phone but with out a rear camera it is useless because you can not scan QR codes or bar codes so I have went back to using my Note 4 as my phone. The Gemini does not last long when playing games on it in Android ans will over heat if you plug it in ans continue using it. I noticed the the internet speed of the Gemini was slower then my phone so I placed the sim back into my phone and open a mobile hot spot and connect the Gemini to it and it is as fast as my phone is. I have not found out why this is and can only assume that that the Gemini is not connecting to 4G so the speed suffers. Phone calls are good and I had no complaints when taking or placing calls. So I you think there will be a 2.0 coming out I would wait for that one since it will hopefully get the mods the backers are asking for. I know I wished PC had backlighted the keyboard because the angle on the screen does not shine on to the keyboard.

Is that the T&Cs from the online store being quoted?

No need to worry about those in Europe if purchasing from the online store, because it is covered by Distance Selling Regs and also by statutory warranty (and sale of goods act in UK) which trumps any T&Cs. Which is why it's more expensive.

Indiegogo perks are a different deal completely because it's not a normal sale transaction - we are giving money fund a project to create a new product. But we are well aware of that when we back the project and accept the risk. For IndieGogo we depend on the goodwill of Planet to take care of us, and they have been pretty good, sending out new keyboard mats etc.

Although someone did successfully challenge the wording in a UK court on a failed project (Vega+), IGG have since tightened that one up.

Yes that was copied from PC website. You are correct in that PC is sending out new keyboard mats but for those that damaged their Gemini's Keyboard caps what is being done for them? I will be waiting for PC to get their repair facility up and going then send mine in to have it fixed/repaired.

How is that far and unfair? All of the backers who have yet to get their's don't know that they have 48 hours before it becomes their problem. I know that it was not until week 2 that I started getting the temp warning telling me to remove the battery. So unless PC is going to rectify the issues with backers getting the X25 CPU while the other backer get the X27 I am not going to give them a pass on this because as post by other members the battery size has changed so saying the it was to come with a X25 CPU and that if you backed early you are stuck with the X25 CPU is not a good thing to do. I worked just as hard as the late backers for my money yet get less then them due to a mistake made by PC. So yes PC might make exceptions to their rules but if not for everyone then that is not fair.
