In my never-ending effort to make ProtonMail work under Sailfish, I'm given to hope that the Android app might be installed. I've seen discussion as to whether something called alien dalvik is installed on our version of Sailfish OS, but I do not remember if it is and if not where to get it. After which f-droid->yalp->protonmail->happiness.

So. Do we have alien dalvik? If not, where might we acquire it?

Thanks.

It isn't in the community edition (our edition). That is one thing that the proper jolla version has along with other business things - which is why you pay for it. There are alternatives out there, I just haven't tried any yet. SailfishOS 3 will have an android compatibility layer (alien dalvik updated?). Have you tried any alternative browsers? The sailfish one is actually a firefox port (gecko engine). There are alternatives: webcat or pirate browser (webkit) are two of the better ones. It may work better under webcat - you can change the browser type to enable desktop mode on the webkit ones. You probably can with the sailfish browser if you go through about:config (I have set a few things using this).

Good luck.

There seem to be at least 3 android environments for sailfish in various states (other than the official jolla one). They are:

shashlik
sfdroid
apkenv

Some seem a bit old, but with a bit of attention, they might be runnable on the gemini. The whole landscape thing might be an issue, however. I don't really need android apps so I haven't looked at this very much. Hopefully somebody with a need can get one working.

Okay, I took one for the team (not really, but it's fun to be a little dramatic): I got a sense of Android applications under SFOS by getting an Xperia X -- a really cool phone, btw -- and purchasing (50 euros) Sailfish X for it. Yes, it was a little bit of a pain. To purchase it, unless you're in one of a few favored countries, you do need to d/l Opera and select one of its VPNs that emerge in one of those countries. Then you can download it. Don't kill your Opera VPN session just yet, though, because the links in the fairly complicated flashing instructions, that require an additional download or two, also fail unless you're in one of those countries.

That having been said, flashing was fairly straightforward. Next up was installing Open Repo (just because), F-droid, and Yalp Store. Whence I was able to get the ProtonMail for Googledroid application that was the entire purpose of the exercise.

Having lived to tell the tale, I can say that Android apps pretty much work on the commercial Sailfish, so presuming there will be one for Gemini, we have that to look forward to.

I say pretty much because there are a few annoyances. I have not, for instance, been able to figure out how to get notifications from the ProtonMail app, nor do I know whether it is running while its GUI is closed, as it is on every other platform. One can download mail attachments, though I have no idea where they go. They do not go to /Nemo/Downloads.

And there is still no WiFi calling, meaning that in telephony the latest and greatest Sailfish OS is behind Blackberry's BB10 of 2012.

That having been said, it is a great phone OS, as you know from Gemini, and the newer version, with Alien Dalvik and other new stuff, is even better. For now, the Xperia is my daily driver. Got to set up the VPN on it and it will be good to go.

You can set at settings->Apps which android app may start in background. Maybe this can help you, I do not use ProtonMail.
Maybe you can find attachments under /home/nemo/android_storage.

You're right as to the downloads -- thanks! -- but while the settings you mention are there, they accomplish nothing, with the ProtonMail application, alas. Apparently some Googledroid apps respect these settings while others don't, and the ProtonMail app is in the latter group.
