OK Is your pc part of an MS Active Direcctory Domain ? If so your probably not going to be able to install the drivers properly unless you have a user id with local admin rights also there might be domain group policies that are resetting the network setup to protect the business network.  I know my work users would not be able to install any network client / driver software at all on a work machine.

CraigTyson and others

Despite my obvious ignorance about computers that I display to the community on a daily basis I have conned my benevolent employers to give me administrator priviledges so I can do what I want on my box.

I have now reinstalled the Intellysinc software on my pc, which I had already tried but this time it worked and I now have a lovely new lan 3 on my pc which is configured as instructed earlier.

I can now ping both ways.
I get the unauthorised connection warning but just keep pressing allow.

Now I was certain that I was supposed to install the old sl5500 version if intellysinc (1.43e) as opposed to latest version that was released with sharprom 3.10 because of well known dtm compatibility issues with oz.

Now eventually intellysinc crashes telling me that the version on the pc does not match the version on your zaurus Intellysync for sl will now exit.

So nearly there one last bit of advice should help me to become a proper oe zealot.

Thanks again for your patience.

My bad.  Should have looked further about the version thing.
I apologise to anybody that may have wasted their time thinking about it.
Now to work on symlinking.

Thanks for all the help people.
