Printing Problem In Gnumeric And Abiword
« on: February 13, 2005, 03:47:31 am »
Hi,

I have setup CUPS and can print from firefox, Xpdf without problem. However, I cannot print from gnumeric and abiword. The print dialog pop up but the program crashed after I click the print/ok button. How can I fix it?  Thanks.

Jacky

Hi Jacky

could you share with us how you got printing to work? I installed cups_1.1.23_armv5tel.ipk on rc12.

Browsing to the builtin cups webserver everything looks OK, ie it has detected the printers that I've setup on other cups server on the lan.

But everything that I print (including the test page) results in an error like:

I think you sent your print job directly from your Zaurus to a HP printer. Like printing to HP printers in other Linux via CUPS, you need to compile and install some other packages so that it can convert the postscript to the printer's language (such as PCL). For details, please visit CUPS's website.

If you have a Linux, you can just configure your printer queue to send the jobs to the printer queue of the Linux machine. By doing that, you only need to install CUPS in your Zaurus and the conversion will be done in the Linux.

Thanks. I've got printing working by sending it to "printer@remote.server" instead of the locally configured printer which I had been doing before.

But unfortunately like you, Gnumeric dies with a segmentation fault and Abiword dies as well. Printing from Firefox, GQView are OK.

I think I'm going to install Gnumeric and Abiword on the PocketWorkstation side and see if that fares any better.

Please keep post back your testing results.

Anyone (sashz?) knows why they crash?

I've installed Abiword on the Debian side, unfortunately I'm not able to access the lp or lpr on the native side.

When previously I installed PocketWorkstation on the Sharp rom (probably following Meanie's instructions and using his packages) I seem to recall that as well as Crd for running Debian programs from the native side, there was an equivalent which allows you to run native programs from the Debian side. Was this a figment of my imagination? If not, can someone kindly remind me how to run native programs from the Debian side.

In the meantime I'm going to just install Cups on the Debian side as well so hopefully I'll be able to print from there.

It's a shame that neither Abiword nor Gnumeric could be persuaded to even just output a PDF file (which can then be sent to printer using lp or lpr).

I forgot mention, Abiword on Debian is able to print to PDF, so it's then a simple matter of using lp or lpr on native side to actually send to printer. Haven't tried Gnumeric yet because I have to free up some space first -- funny how 4GB gets used up so quick (maybe it's all the MP3s that have taken up residence on it   )

OK on Debian, I installed Abiword, Gnumeric and cupsys-client (NB this pulls in cupsys-bsd and on setup it asks whether or not to install a BSD style printer server, I declined).

When printing from Abiword and Gnumeric, both their print dialogs picks up the cups server running on the native side, and hence I'm able to select which network printer to print to. And the best thing is that it works

Now the only problem is that I'm not able to use SCIM (running on the native side) as an input method for programs running on Debian
