Symbol Spectrum24 Wifi Card On 5500 Cacko
« on: February 23, 2005, 12:08:49 am »
OK I have a brand new Spectrum 24 card.
When I insert it, there is no globe on the taskbar, just the normal CF memory card Icon.

cardctl ident shows:
product info: "Symbol", "Spectrum24 LA4100 Series WLAN PC Card", "1.00"
manfid: 0x026c, 0x0001
function 6 (network)

cardctl status shows:
3.3v 16 bit PC card
function 0: [ready]

I tried to enter it in the wlan-ng.conf file, then removed it after A ) it didn't work and B ) in another thread maslovsky said the symbol card wouldn't work that way.

I don't see anything in dmesg of note either, no drivers attempting to load, nothing related to eth0 or wlan0.
All dmesg shows upon insert is sa1100_pcmcia_init(0)

**edit**
OK I have found the spectrum.conf file and the card is listed there.
lsmod does not show a driver loaded either, unless I am mistaken I should see something related to spectrum_cs, orinoco, or hermes? (forgive me I am network challenged in linux  )
Thanks for any help.

** edit again**
iwconfig shows no wireless extensions either.

** More editing**
It appears that after a fresh (hard)reset, and I insert my card it still mounts incorrectlym but the z will not suspend, it just hangs. If I do a soft reset  that issue goes away but the card will still not mount or start)
Maslovsky, if you see this, Are the spectrum drivers compiled into the kernel or are they separate modules? I don't see them under the pcmcia modules dir.

*** FINAL EDIT***
OK I reflashed with a fresh download of the 64-0 ROM, now the card mounts. (Although when I try to connect, the screen now displays garbage, but that's another thread) I must have had an older 64-0 Filesystem with the new kernel and that was screwing me up.

Hmm, I also have the same card (although >1yr old) and it used to work just fine with my Cacko ROM.  Even kismet/wellenreiter worked.

However, I can't check my setup, since I'm running pdaXrom right now.

i have the same card with a zaurus c700, cacko lite 1.22, i do not remember if it showed the globe icon (i think it was changed to a ACplug connector), but try to add a dummy conection and check if the globe or ACplug connector shows.

I tried that too. I think the card may be defective, as the activity light doesn't even blink when I insert the card.

Card is probably not defective, my card didn't light up either when I didn't have drivers for it.  in the /libs/module/ kernel directory search for spectrum_cs.o to see if the module exists at all. You can also try "modprobe spectrum_cs".

I recently tried installing the 5000D cacko/crow rom, I love it but it didn't come with any drivers for my spectrum24 card. I had to download the kernel and build the modules myself. The only problem I am finding now is that the modules only seem to work with no SSID and no WEP. And I was reading some instructions on the web which say the kernel has to have wireless extensions enabled and I have to use something like wconfig or something like that. And the cacko kernel I have doesn't, and I am not sure how exactly to rebuild that particular kernel. I might give it a try and see if I can do it right, unfortunately I am a little concerned since I am doing all my cross-compiling from cygwin and not from an actual linux os.

I am a little disappointed by this card (the modules and everything for it), the reason I bought it, was because I read that it is really good on battery life.

It works perfect, and the drivers are compiled in the kernel and are not modules. I didn't even have to use any special programs to configure it, I just used the network setting program. I did have my own spectrum.conf file in there from when I was working on my own module, I don't know if that would have made a difference. The contents of my /home/etc/pcmcia/spectrum.conf are :

device "spectrum_cs"
#  class "network" module "hermes", "orinoco", "spectrum_cs"
class "spectrum" module "hermes", "orinoco", "spectrum_cs"

card "LA4100 Spectrum24 CF WLAN Card"
  manfid 0x026c, 0x0001
  bind "spectrum_cs"

card "Socket Communications CF+ LP WLAN Card"
  manfid 0x0104, 0x0001
  bind "spectrum_cs"

The other thing I didn't realize was I have 3 other files (spectrum, wireless.opts, and wlng2wt.opts). I basicly copied the files from the original sharp spectrum drivers, but I don't know how much of a role they play.

Oh also, iwconfig said something about no wireless extensions for me as well even though everything works.

It appears that the Z is attempting to mount the card as storage because it shows up in the file manager as being mounted but contents 'not available'

Can somebody tell me step by step what should happen when I insert this card? Or Failing that how to mount it manually?

I have the same card and it worked perfect when I was using cacko (and new kernel too).
Sometimes it might not mount it right and

Code: [Select]
cardctl status
says it is suspended do

Code: [Select]
cardctl resume
And you can play a little with:
Code: [Select]
cardctl reset
Code: [Select]
cardctl scheme default
(or your current scheme)
I had some problems when inserting the card sometimes, and I could solve them this way, resetting the card a couple times, maybe. Check your network applet too, to see everything is right, it should change your scheme almost instantly, if it takes a while then the card is probably suspended. Changing card status unspectedly happened to me sometimes when using Wellenreiter or when fiddling a little more than I should with network config. (I should stop touching things that work...   )
Hope this helps.
