Textmaker Problems
« on: February 07, 2005, 08:55:33 am »
Hi,

I have purchased the full version of the program for C860 (Sharp ROM). However, three annoying problems are so persistent that I can't run it normally.

Problem #1:
Everytime I ran Textmaker, a screen kept popping up asking me to fill in my Home and Business information said to be made for document templates. Even though I filled them up, the empty forms returned at startup. (The program is not "fast-loaded".)

Problem #2:
I tried to configure the panel size and layout in "Extra-->Preferences". I chose small icon size and Win 98 style (which is said to make the program run more smoothly), but my setting failed to take any effect and everything remains as the default settings.

Problem #3:
I had to uninstall the program "twice" (!?) in order to get rid of the program. I did the uninstallation with the default Add/Remove. Strangely, although the program could be removed from RAM (as seen in System Info), it remained in the remove list. I had to reboot the machine and remove it the second time and the program was finally gone for good.

I have tried to open up the permission of /home/zaurus/.softmaker by chmod -R a+rwx /home/zaurus/.softmaker  and chmod -R 777 /home/zaurus/.softmaker

but ended up with this error:

chmod: /home/zaurus/.softmaker/ofl.ini: Input/output error

Then I tried to delete the folder manually after uninstalling it (twice as mentioned), and got yet another error:

rm: unable to stat '/home/zaurus/.software/ofl.ini' : Input/output error
rm: unable to remove '/home/zaurus/.software/ofl.ini' : Directory not empty

Have other users experienced these problems? Your help is most appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I think if you can solve Problem #3, 1 and 2 will go away. It deffinitely seems like TextMaker can't write to its own config files, and you can't delete or change them either.

What model of Z do you have and what ROM?

If you can get to a console before Q I might try deleting it from there (in Cacko ROM you hit the / key during the "wait . . ." prompt before Qtopia loads and then select to option to go to a console).

My first thought is that you have some issue with some file being held open by some process. That or some corruption in the file system.

(I have no association with TextMaker, but I love the program. So I want it to work for everyone, so everyone will use it and like it and TextMaker will make money and keep supporting it, and maybe even port PlanMaker too.  )

Thanks again, clofland.

I agree that problem #3 is the key.  Now I suspect that the app is somehow hanging in the system and I have yet to find a solution to detect or kill it.

My device is C860 running Sharp ROM.

I do love the program as it fares far far better than Hancom Word.  I still think the app is worth the price, and it may just be a killer app (had the problems not happened...)

I googled for "rm: unable to stat" "Input/output error" and it seems to indicates some corruption in the file system. Seems to happen both on EXT2 and JFFS2 filesystems (JFFS2 is what our Z's are using).

However,
1. I did not find ANY "repair" tool for JFFS2 filesystems. They appear to just "work." and
2. Even if I did, you would have to run it BEFORE you mounted the filesystem, which is difficult on the Z.

Personally, I would just reflash my Z, but I do that rather too often anyay (to try new things, not because of problems) and have it down to a pretty straight forward process. I can understand why you might not want to do this if at all possible. (After all, isn't Linux supposed to be stable so you don't have to reboot hourly and reformat weekly like you do Windows?  )

Maybe someone else will have a better answer?

Thanks again!

Yet the most weird thing is the problems (fail to uninstall/delete/save settings) only happen to Textmaker; other programs don't have any issue, AFAIK.

Yet another update:

I tried to remove the directory ".softmaker" under "/home/zaurus/" with TreeExplorer!QT and the but in Terminal, but to no avail.  The peculiar thing is there is only one file labeled "ofl.ini" in this directory, which can't be edited un terminal or other editors.  And even though I can delete ofl.ini, I still cannot delete the directory.  After switching to any other location and then going back to the directory, ofl.ini mysteriously reappears.

Your help will be greatly appreciated!  Thanks in advance.

The latest version (405, I believe) -- the one I bought, wouldn't you know -- is a real mess. ipkg reports an installation error, but all installs seemingly well enough. Go to uninstall it, though, and you can't. I had to sift through and find the 4.4MB file in the "bin" folder of my Internal Flash and remove it manually.
