Interesting...

On the same news page they also have a story about Sony killing off the Clie in Japan, which contains a mention of the Z and Buffalo, manufacturer of WiFi cards (their English translation):
Quote
Sony kills Clie, even in Japan!

Well, it seems that the rumours have become reality, and after throwing the towel in Europe and the States, the Japanese giant decided to stop the production of its last Clie models (VZ90 and TH55) in July 2005. Impress has the dirt on this story, and they say that the PSP will fill up the gap. Impress makes it clear at the end of their article that Sony will focus on the PSP and mobile phones… so will we have a PDAphone soon in Japan?

The PDA market becomes a lot more dull all of a sudden, as Sony had a nice share of the market. PDA’s powered by PocketPC are present on the market thanks to HP and Toshiba (which is the only brand present in the Japanese press concerning this), and there also is the Sharp Zaurus, but that has some problems too as Buffalo, the company that makes the WiFi Compact Flash cards for the Zaurus, has decided to call it quits too, and new owners of a Zaurus will not be able to get WiFi on their devices anymore.

If manufacturers like Nintendo start offering PDA functions on their devices, and if Sony offers a browser and basic PIM functionality on the PSP, there will no longer be any PDA’s in Japan very soon.

They also mention Hitachi's new 6GB microdrive.

And here's their English translation of the Z item:
Quote
Rumors: We may have a New Zaurus?

BE CAREFUL, THIS IS UNCONFIRMED INFORMATION: I talked to a retailer on the phone this morning, who told me that there COULD be a new Zaurus in March. Of course, no news from Sharp, so WAIT & SEE.

This new device could be a logical evolution of the line-up (Zaurus 3000 and 860), because there is not one Sharp PDA with Wireless LAN functionality and it’s no longer possible to get WiFi cards for these existing Zaurus models in Japan.

I find it interesting that they think users in Japan won't be able to get WiFi cards for the Z anymore in Japan because of Buffalo going belly-up.  There are plenty of other vendors of WiFi cards.  Surely the Japanese could at least import some?

I hope they're correct though about Sharp adding WiFi to the new Z because of this (or for any reason, for that matter!).

I would also guess that the new Z would use the new 6GB microdrive.

This would then be a compelling upgrade for many C860/760 users, I think: built-in WiFi; 6GB microdrive; and USB host.  I may have to get the checkbook out myself.

This would be a very compelling upgrade....
Gorgeous C860, 256 Sandisk SD, 1Gig Pretec 40x CF, PDAIR leather case & the really cool retractable iPDA USB sync/charge cable. Powered by PDAXROM BETA 1.

My wish - to have a Command & Conquer style game on my Z! (FREECNC!!!) Simcity 2000 would also be great.

Count me in on that upgrade, this is what I've been waiting for.  I hope this means that Sharp will expand the Zaurus line to fill the void left by Sony leaving the marketplace.  Several new Zaurii in various configurations: wifi built-in; wifi & bt; bt only....  you get the picture.

Does anyone know what share of the handheld market Sony has in Japan?  I hope Sharp moves agressively to fill the void and increase their dominance in Japan.  The stronger they are the better chance we have of getting upgraded Z's more frequently.

Wifi seems unlikely to me. It really isn't used very much in Japan. A few cafes have them - and people have wifi networks at home of course - but it's no use on the trains! Everyone has these PHS data cards, which run on a monthy subscription and (usually) can swap from pda to laptop etc...so are also unlikely to be bundled with a Z.

Just a guess though.

I used to have a PHS card (both AirH" and @FreeD)... neither worked worth a darn on the trains, at least not in the area that I live in (near Nagoya).

A lot of Japanese Zaurus users have been hoping for WiFi, as well.

Buffalo Technology is not going belly up.  They may (although i haven't heard this elsewhere) stop making WiFi cards but they are still very much in business.

True to a rumor on 2ch, it would appear that a new Zaurus - C1000 - is being released. Someone has posted pictures of an advert pamphlet for it. If you want to have a look, grab the file reds2708.zip from http://www.urawa-reds.org/up/upload.cgi

Realize that these photos could be fake, but the manual details do not match any existing Zaurus.

Basically, it appears to be a C3000 without a hard drive and with more flash. Oh, and a black top, ala C750.

The 2ch rumor is claiming that an official announcement will be made later today.

Seems like a C3000 with a Black top indeed

Specs :
PXA 270 | 416 MhZ
640x480 3.7 " screen (no 4 inch like the 6000)
128 MB | 63 MB | 52 MB |  SDRAM 64MB
SD x 1  and CF (doesnt say in English) Type II x 1
USB (dont know wether host or not) | IRDA 115 kbps
Battery EA-BL11

Thats as far as I could read out of the Japanese specs (apart from heightxwidth info)
There is a 278 number below the physical size specs line - what is that referring to ?

Its strange that theres no HDD built in like the C3000 - this seems like a downgrade - maybe a cheaper version.
New no more-C1000 / 5000D (sold my 6000 and 750) | Cacko ROM 1.23 on C1000 | 256 MB CF | 2GB PNY SD card | Socket Networker WiFi CF Card | USB Host cable from StreamlineCPUS | Mini Microphone (for voice recording) |

nilch: 278 grams

Considering the model number, this seems to be an upgrade to the C7/8x0 series.

Hmmm....I wonder what trisoft will say about this.  If it is cheaper than the 3000, it will be very attractive to me.
