make me wonder.... if ya popped the top would there be a cf connector inside? where the microdrive is on the 3k? That might be interesting.

Hi,

you won't find a connector for a microdrive. This is a flash based machine.
The C1000 will just fill the gap the SL-C860 left in the Zaurus line.

Price will be a bit higher than the SL-C860 actually is and it is a good choice
for all the people that feel not really comfortable carrying a PDA with a HD.

Looking at the specs (http://ezaurus.com/lineup/sl/slc1000/slc1000_spec.html) it's most definitely an 860 upgrade.... new case and 416hz PXA270.

The specs do seem to hint that it has a USB host port. If you babelfish this page and compare the specs under 'Connected Terminal' the devicew lists the usual stuff like Infrared, I/O Port, Communication adapter terminal (CF slot?) then USB port (the 860 page lists the others and not the USB).

Furthermore if it shares a lot of the chipset with the 3000 isn't it more likely to be USB host ? - I thought I saw a posting that said something about companion chipsets for this range of processors offering this feature as standard... not sure... KOPSIS: do know anything about this????

What is great is that since it uses the case from C3000, there is still a room inside because microdrive is missing!  This means that a bluetooth or wifi can  probably be installed inside and possibly connected to the second CF connector (if it's there). A dream of Zarus with built-in wireless coming true?

I'm not sure this is likely... we need to wait for the dissect pics.

I think it's probable that Sharp would have omitted the CF connector from the board assembly. + I don't know of any BT or WIFI cards that are exactly the same size as a CF storage card, they all seem to be slightly larger with the hope of placing the antenna outside the casing.. this may also hint that putting a card inside the case may not give you good reception.

Dissection pictures will be very interesting. A second internal slot, even if it can't be used for wireless connectivity, would be very interesting.

That being said, I don't hold much hope. I fully expect blank solderpads where the internal connection would be in a 3000. If they bring the 1000 in as cheaply as expected then they aren't going to waste money on an unused CF connector.

I really wish the 3000 was the black one! I'd vastly prefer the black 1000 case to the white 3000, but I can't pass up the internal hard drive!

At least it'll come early enough for us to get some details on it before I have to buy mine - my mule is heading over to Japan on the 25th so I have to make a decision as to which one to buy by then. I fully expect that it'll be a 3000.

I’m beginning to wonder now if the reference to SL-C3100 in the photo storage app might not be a typo for SL-C1000? The rumour was that the announcement would be made in March and this is possibly it.

As things stand, the 4gb with C3000 makes it the attractive option for me.  A definitive statement from Sharp would be helpful so that I can place an order.

So, what's the deal with rom images?  Is it at all likely that the pdaxrom or oz builds will work out of the box with this hardware, or will more development have to be done.

I'm guessing the hardware has more in common with the C3000 rather than the c860.

hQuin,

No it's likely that PDAXROM and current Cacko will not work on any of the new hardware that Sharp are bringing out.

For a start the ATI W100 is out of production so the SL-C860 etc. are all out of production. The new units just use the PXA270 to do all the grunt work.

All current ROMs need some rework if they have ATI W100 dependencies... + there's a lot of new stuff to support and a new Kernel base to start working with (Lineo 2.4.20 (spit)).

I have a feeling that we will start seeing some new ROMs soon though.

I'd say your guess would be correct. Let's just hope it will work with anything that appears for the C3000 as that would certainly encourage development in that direction.

The C860 is still the best choice when it comes to ROM support.

Cheers

Even if connector is missing, it can probably be added. Socket Bluetooth card is exactly the same size as storage card. Also, Symbol and Socket WiFi cards are quite small and might fit. Finaly, CF card case can be removed and only the board itself added, which should be smaller.

What I can say regarding ROM supprot is that the new Cacko ROM is more likely to appear for the C1000 than C3000 simply because: I like C1000 more (it's black! , it's cheeper, I already have a microdrive and it has layout similar to current Zaurus models, which means easier transition.

Well that has made my choice easier!

I've been holding back to see where Cacko goes next!

Thanks for making your opinion known, that actually puts quite a different perspective on it. I shall go with the model that gets Cacko ROM support.

Can you keep us informed when you purchase?

Oh Man!, I'm sensing that you have a bit of a downer over the SL-C3000.

That's a shame, when you start to look at the file system model then it's not too much of a challenge to put the zimage/initrd in flash and the rest on the HDD.

Ah well, if you are keen to work on th SL-C1000 as a unit then I guess that the Kernel build and patch set is likely to be similar to the SL-C3000 (and be based on that 2.4.20 Lineo cr@p)) so it may not be too hard to port to a 3000....

I thought I saw you PM'ing someone who was selling their 3K Anton, have you gone right off the idea now?

Mas, I'm going to make a new thread about the C-1000, mind re-posting your info in there?
