In Serious Trouble...
« on: February 28, 2005, 07:52:03 am »
Hi all, just joined the forum tonight after reading much good oil over the last few days.

Bought a SLC-3000 in Japan ) Lovely machine!
Was hoping to start coding, however in the process of installing a compiler i stopped it booting (yay, smart stuff!) from the built-in HDD.

Wrecked it after 2 hours out of the box...
I probably changed something in the fstab, guess it could be worse... all I get is the SHARP logo splash screen and one line of (very) fast moving text- (barely visible) at the bottom... it seems to be showing output from a grep command; something like "grep /var/lib/pcmcia... file not found"- over and over.

Re-Image the drive?
The power buttton won't work and u can only restart by pulling the battery out... so I fugure I have to get re-image the drive.

Oh no! Japanese Service Menus!
To restore the OS it'd be handy to know what the service menus say. Does anyone have any ideas?

Armed with Japanese manuals and CD-Roms I have been unable to get very far.  Searching for some kind of Disaster Recovery or imaging routine (not on the CDs), I dowloaded this SYSTC300.DBK file from Sharp- put it on a 512Mb CF card and went through the service menus to point to use it, but these really need some translation for me to get what they say.  I think (Following steps discussed online for SL-C860s) I am sure I get through this ok- the Zaurus looks to the CF and boots, but it stops as it can't find the right files... i guess.... not sure really.

Does anyone know how to Restore a SLC-3000 to the factory OS? All comments appreciated!

don't have a 3000 but there are help guides on the forums here. good luck!
Gorgeous C860, 256 Sandisk SD, 1Gig Pretec 40x CF, PDAIR leather case & the really cool retractable iPDA USB sync/charge cable. Powered by PDAXROM BETA 1.

My wish - to have a Command & Conquer style game on my Z! (FREECNC!!!) Simcity 2000 would also be great.

I think that TriSoft has what you're looking for. Point your browser to this page: http://www.trisoft.de/en_c3000howto.htm

and download their (very good and useful) english startup guide.

You'll find what you're looking for (how to restore the 3000 to factory state in pages 19/20/21.

Happy restoring!

Thank you both ever so much.   the solution for anyone in the same problem is at the bottom of this post... that manual link is the business!  THANKS A HEAP!

** To Format Internal Flash to new Custom SLC-3000 ROM **

** Note You will lose all the data on your Zaurus!**

1.   Make sure you have the updater.sh and initrd.bin files in the root of your cf/sd card, or the Flash image from Sharp I mentioned in my first post.
(Yes, you can use either cf or sd to flash now!)

2.   Make sure the Zaurus isn't plugged into AC power.
3.   Remove battery for at least 5 seconds.
4.   Replace battery (replace battery cover, lock cover), plug in AC power.
5.   Press and hold the "OK" button on the keyboard.
6.   Turn the power on, you should see the Japanese service menu:
7.   Now Plug in the Power Cord.
(You will get an error if it isn't plugged in!)
8.   Select option 3 (Erase all / Format (all data will be lost!))
9.   You should then get a confirmation message (in Japanese) with a Yes/No
option (left one is Yes). Click the Yes button to confirm.
(If you don't get this, then you don't have the AC power plugged in.)
10.   Wait, get some coffee/tea, watch the pretty screen.

I did the same thing to mine last week and have posted notes on how to do a factory reset, language conversion and common customizations:
