OZ 3.3.5 and a Netgear MA701
« on: January 16, 2004, 11:58:50 pm »
Someone please help me.   I cannot get my Netgear MA701 wlan cf card to work in my Z.  When I insert the card, it is recognized as anonymous memory and sometimes as an ambicom cf wlan card.  Running \"cardctl ident\" shows the card as an MA701, I have copied down the product info, manfid and made an entry in hostap_cs.conf ..  but still no wifi ...  help

Try upgrading the hostap-modules to the 0.1.2 (in OZ 3.3.6-pre1). Better yet, install the complete 3.3.6-pre1.

Just reflashed my Z to OZ 3.3.6-pre1.  Fresh install and the MA701 still won\'t work.  Still seems to be detected as anonymous memory.   Occasionally, after this has occured, my Z won\'t recognize any CF cards after I have removed the MA701.  A reboot ususally resolves that issue.

Now, If I reinsert the CF card in a couple times, eventually it might be detected as a Z-Com XI300.  When it comes up as a Z-Com, I can run \"cardctl ident\" and it registers as a Netgear.

I haven\'t had the chance to modify the hostap_cs.conf file to add an entry for the netgear yet.  I\'ll do that when I get home.  When adding an entry to hostap_cs.conf, should the bind be to \"hostap_cs\"?  This is a prism2 card.

Anyone out there with a working MA701?  Please provide some insight.

Hmm.. time to for a call to donate me a prism2 card. My last one got stolen, so I no longer can test/fix hostap stuff

I\'m running OZ 3.3.5 and a Netgear MA701.  It usually gets detected as the zl300, but works just fine.  I do have a lot of problems with cf wireless/memory cards not getting detected at all.  Cardctl ident detects the cards properly.  The problems appears to be with cardmgr.
\"cardctl eject && cardctl insert\" hangs with card inserted.
\"pcmcia restart\" complains that cardmgr is already running.
\"ps -A\" shows no cardmgr running.
There IS an entry for cardmgr.pid in the /var/run/ directory.
\"killall cardmgr\" reports it is NOT running, but cardmgr will not start.  cardmgr says there is another cardmgr running.
I\'ve tried deleting the cardmgr.pid entry and starting cardmgr, but it still will not start.  If I could somehow get cardmgr to run it would save me from having to reboot the Zaurus.

Any ideas on what to try next?
Thanks

Well at least I am not alone on this ..

It appears my ma701 is now working, it seems to work when detected as a Z-Com XI300 .. but not all the time.  Occasionally it will stop communicating all together, dropping packets, a reboot ususally fixes that.

At least it is somewhat working now .. I sure would like to resolve these issues though, it\'s a bit annoying having to reboot a bunch of times just to get on the net.

Scratch that .. it works for about 2 minutes, then dies.  The link light stays on solid, I can surf.  2 minutes later, the link light starts flashing and I\'ve lost the connection.  God damn it.

How strong is your signal?  I\'ve only had problems when the signal was weak.  It seems worse with DHCP networks.  As long as the signal is good my Z usually stays connected.

Looks all good now, my signal is good.  Problem was the CF card was loose in the slot, you could wiggle it forward and back.  A couple pieces of electrical tape to the back of the CF card did the trick.  It now sits snug in the slot and works fine.  Still experiencing issues with cardctl and cardmgr not mounting and recognizing the card properly, but oh well, I can live with that.

Note:  If you are experiencing seg faults with konq and have liquid set as your theme, disable liquid.  For whatever reason, that theme seg faults konq on certain websites (like slashdot).

Hey there, it seems that I have the same "problem" with the Netgear MA701. I am currently using a fresh flash of hentges ROM OZ 3.3.6-pre1 / Opie 1.1.3 with a pre-installed wellenreiter.

I am going to try and summarize the issues I have experienced:

My card has always loaded as a Z-Com XI300... It was rock solid in OZ 3.2 (can't remeber which Opie, i think it was the first stable one though), didn't work at all in 3.3.5 Opie 1.0.2.. and sort-of works in the hentges ROM OZ 3.3.6-pre1 / Opie 1.1.3

when I mean sort of, I mean that when I got it "working" for about ten minutes yesterday. it lost about 30% of the packets when I ping an arbitrary ip out over the web. Since then I have not been able to get it working. Wellenriter worked fine with the hostap driver and the "Prism headers" box checked. As for how it ended....

"Scratch that .. it works for about 2 minutes, then dies. The link light stays on solid, I can surf. 2 minutes later, the link light starts flashing and I've lost the connection."

That just about describes the situation, except I was able to use it for a while longer.

I am only about 10 feet from the AP so distance / signal strength is not an issue.

files I'm dealing with:

/dev/wlan0 exists as a directory. somehow this at one point had disappeared (wlan0 no file or directory errors..?) and the card actially registered as an Ethernet card!? so I re-created it.

/etc/network/interfaces has the following for wlan0

iface wlan0 inet dhcp

I have added the entry to the /etc/pcmcia/hostap_cs.conf

card "NETGEAR" "MA701 Wireless CF Card"
manfid 0xd601, 0x0002
bind "hostap_cs"

of note here (maybe) is the fact that two other cards show that same manfid. I have commented them out.

card "Z-COM XI300 11Mb/s WLAN Card"
manfid 0xd601, 0x0002
bind "hostap_cs"

card "Fulbond Airbond XI-300B"
manfid 0xd601, 0x0002
bind "hostap_cs"

I have noticed these symptoms:

after a reboot the card is seen as "anonymous memory".
after ejection and re-insertion it is not recognized at all.
opon second re-insetion it is recognized as an "unsupported card"
upon third insertion the card is seen as "anonymous memory".

cardctl ident is inconsistent sometimes it does identify the card, sometimes it does not.

next I uncommented the XI300 card and commented out the NETGEAR and Fulbond cards.

rebooted

first card insert is XI300..no connectivity.. second is "anonymous memory" eek! cardctl  ident doesn't recognize the card....

uncommented all the cards above

rebooted.

I tried the electrical tape fix, no dice.

only comes up as anonymous memory. ouch. looks like I'm headed back to 3.2....

Just wanted to say that your experiences exactly mirror what I saw tonight - dropping the connection (2 feet from AP), detecting as anonymous memory and nasty dmesg output. Also running OZ 3.3.6-pre1.
Pretty sure that as another member experienced, this is a hardware fault - I tried it in my laptop with a CF converter which had worked last week, is also no longer working, so I would expect reverting to OZ3.2 would not solve the problem - have you had the chance to prove this?

Lol... it's been 12 months 18 days since I bought it - luckily it appears netgear does a 3yr warranty, will be taking it back in this week... now where is that box and invoice....
