5600: Installing Apps To An Sd Card
« on: March 24, 2005, 05:59:20 pm »
Hi all. When I was using OZ I had gotten used to depending on ipkg & ipkg-link, but since I moved over to Watapon on my 5600 I've been struggling to get apps installed onto my sd card.

My card is currently divided into 2 partitions, the first fat (so 'doze could get at it) the other ext2 (for installing apps). But according to this FAQ entry I should just be able to install apps to a fat formatted card, which I tried & seems to work for most stuff.

So should I just fdisk the card again & go back to one large fat partition, or does a sharp-based rom have any good use for a ext2 partitioned card? And what about the second partition, how can I get the gui package manager to recognize it? And is the gui package manager dependable enough to rely on (another thing currently with OZ), or should I keep on using ipkg?

thks

KTrove! on VFAT......  Works for me.  Install the app in gui to ram then run ktrove to move and link it to SD.....

Sounds kinda like what ipkg-link does. The only limitation I can see is that if you didn't have enough internal ram to install a huge app (quake?) in the first place. And I assume that it would matter where or what the 'trove' is, either partition 1 or 2, vfat or ext2.

Thanks, I'll check it out some more.

Yup you do need space to install first but I used to have a 8MB swapfile which Id switch off when installing new apps, ktrove them and recreate the swap file. KTrove allows you to carry on using VFAT on your SD/CF/microdrive and also allows you to put the app back into ram without having to reinstall.  I found it quite usefull when all I had was a CF card and so could move opera back and forth when using a WIFI card.  It also lets you activate and deactivate apps (i guess it deletes the sym links) at will so you can have diffrent versions of the same app installed (someone might want to do this??)

It does need Opie SH to run through the gui though.

So I'm back on watapon again (for a while at least), and this issue has popped up for me again. But I'd really prefer to install apps to my ext2 partition on my card (it's useful for a lot of other stuff too), so what are my options? I've added the destination to my ipkg.conf & stuff installs there fine. If that's all I need , then can somebody please attach a copy of ipkg-link from OZ for me to use? thks

I am setting up a 5600 for a friend and the ipkg-link from Cacko works great with the watapon rom. Here is the one from Cacko-1.23 (unzip and put somewhere in the path). To link all the apps on the sd card, I usually just do:

Code: [Select]
ipkg-link mount /mnt/card
