Cacko 3k Usage Poll
« on: April 30, 2005, 04:45:13 pm »
OK, just looking to try to nail down the numbers to see if things are worthwhile.

If you are using Cacko 3K at all in any form then please just answer even if you don't feel like posting an answer.

I would like problems posted on the 3k-feedback thread that Kahm started, however, I welcome general criticism either way on this thread.

BTW: Don't think you are being counted for PayPal nags. I'm not into that at the moment.

I am considering possibly using PayPal if people want to contribute towards getting certain hardware tested because I have a Bluetooth and WLAN card and I'm probably not going to buy another unless someone buys one for me... hardware contributions would be another option. - Let me know what your opinions would be on this if you like.. I certainly wouldn't intend living on the proceeds... (yeah, right in Chiswick!?)

Please vote,

- Andy

Hi Andy,

Only comment about your poll is that there should have been a choice for 'GREAT!!!'

Installed Beta1 earlier today and so far it's GREAT!

Install went smooth on first try. All my data and apps were there after it rebooted!!

Only one weird thing so far is that when I clicked the 'On/Off' button on the front edge of the C3000 it won't turn off!

Everything else so far seems to work well...

Again, THANKS for doing this Andy!!!

ArchiMark is right.  "Good" just isn't adequate.

Thank you!

Thanks guys, but as I said it's mainly as a 'headcount'.

Kept it simple so that people that are happy don't need to eulagise whilst people that think the ROM is bad in some way get to say why.

I have installed beta1 without any problems. It works like a charm so far.

Thank you (and all people having worked hard for this) very much :-)

This is really a good ROM, and I'm sure the few remaining bugs will soon be ironed out! This is what beta versions are made for, of course, and I suspect that most people wouldn't be affected anyway by the (very) few already known issues.

OK, only 13 people using the ROM so far.

If you were the one that found it bad please help us make it good by saying why.

Thanks,

I didn't get a chance to install it over the weekend, too many family commitments.
Could someone share how long the process of backing up and installing is?

Thanks and Muchos Gracias for teh new rom!

Didn't had time to test it yet ... will try this week-end probably.
BTW thank you for showing the way of making new c3000 roms
SL-C3000 - pdaXrom 1.1.0Beta1
SL-C860 - pdaXrom 1.1.0 RC8 (charging circuitry dead :( )
CF RamStar 512 Mb / Hitachi 4Gb microdrive (thanks to creative's muvo² :p)
SD Sandisk 1Gb / Viking 256 Mb
Linksys WCF13 CF wifi card

Anyone willing to donate for my work, please consider donate to pdaXrom and/or OE/OZ projects instead, I wouldn't have been able to do anything without them ...

Lacking any specific negative feedback, I guess you'll have to assume that the two "Bad" votes are from people who prefer OZ or X and won't like _any_ Qtopia ROM.

Andy,

I (and possibly lot of other non-techies) am watching this thread really carefully and waiting for the gurus to say that the Cacko is safe and easy to use for those who are technically challenged.  So, from what I see and hear, Cacko rocks and I will be glad to jump on the wagon when you say it is ready for dummies.

I know that I could only be an obstacle in testing a beta version since I will ask too many stupid questions and won't be able to figure out a solution if something goes wrong.

Thanks and keep up the good work.

That illustrates the main benefit of Cacko over the OZ project. Cacko starts from Sharp's mature base where everything works. Compared to OZ, it sacrifices speed and open-ness for stability and compatibility. OZ, on the other hand, does the opposite - using more modern compilers and optimizations, it is apparently faster than Sharp's software, and 100% open. Unfortunately, it is not yet a mature product, doesn't support everything 100%, and is poorly documented. My take on it is that with perseverence OZ will be the future of the platform. For the moment, it is better left for those closer to the bleeding edge.

I find the attitude displayed by many of the vocal OZ supporters quite off-putting. Once we get Cacko3k stable, I'll let them put their ROM where their mouth is and try it out on the 860. Unfortunately, it's primarily the people involved with the OZ project that has kept me away from OZ so far.

I do really appreciate the degree of customization (English conversion, KeyHelper, Overclocking...) and the ease of use (Sharp-compatible)associated with the Cacko ROM. But it's true also that sticking with the Sharp applications has some drawbacks, like when those apps are poorly designed (which is the case, for instance, of the datebook application). The fact that the OZ project is open source, indeed, might lead on the long run to more optimized and/or better designed PIM apps, for instance.

For now, I keep the Cacko ROM on my 3k, as I'd really like to have a stable setup that I can rely on (well, if/when I can get my GPRS CF card working, that is... until that time, it's not really satisfying, but after all, nobody but me decided to help beta test it!  ), but I'll certainly be monitoring the progress of the OZ ROM as well!
