I find the attitude displayed by many of the vocal OZ supporters quite off-putting. Once we get Cacko3k stable, I'll let them put their ROM where their mouth is and try it out on the 860. Unfortunately, it's primarily the people involved with the OZ project that has kept me away from OZ so far.

I think there's a good reason for OZ, but I think that to a certain extent ROMs are like a religion or philosophy, you can be a devout follower and zealously push your views or you can follow what seems sensible to you and respect other's wishes to do the same.

I prefer the latter and I hope that if what you say is indeed true then it's not all down to the fact that folks regard user of Sharp ROM or derivative ROMs like Cacko to require 'education'. We can't really foster a spirit of mutual co-operation and like that and I would really like to see that happen more.

Maybe in an ideal world we would all run one ROM which suited everyone's purpose, some of us will compromise a little performance or open source idealism to get some feature or base stability from the Sharp ROM.

I prefer to think that we have 17 users at present, 2 aren't happy and I would like to know how we can make them happy based around the fact that they understand what we are trying to achieve. So please say what's wrong and we can maybe do something about it.

I kinda expected it would be the people that actually liked the ROM to be less vocal, usually if someone has a beef with a ROM they speak up - that's as I say why I instigated the poll really to find out how many users we have.

And please guys, if someone openly expresses their dislikes and reasons lets not go on a witch hunt (not saying anyone will, just want to be more encouraging here). We can learn from people expressing their dislikes. If people don't like and don't say that's far worse.

I've just received the C3000 yesterday, but I've already try the Cacko and OZ and Cacko is my preference

but...
- Fonts when rotatin get mad
- on/off button does not work (major problem)

Never the less its a great work.

This is almost certainly because you didn't clear the unit as described in the readme file. The on/off issue indicates this.

I've been using Cacko on my C3k for the last week, and I think its a great improvement upon the Sharp ROM.

I'm running it with the latest (18a) tetsu kernel and nearly all is well.

The only problem I have is with the wireless connectivity, as my Ambicom WL1100C v2.2 doesn't work in Managed mode anymore; bit of a nuisance. However I haven't been at home for the last week and using it on the move without wireless connectivity it is great!

Good job so far!

I've been lurking in the Cacko 3K threads since I've joined, and from what I can tell it's going to be (is) a great platform for the Zaurus.  There's only a few things that are keeping me from trying out the beta at this point:

1.  I'm still a little unsure about the whole flashing process - I want to make sure that I'll be able to un-brick my Zaurus if something goes wrong.  

2.  I need to get a 256Mb CF card for the flashing process.

3.  I'm waiting for the wireless issues with the AmbiCom WL1100C-CF to be resovled.

So hopefully within a month or so I'll be ready for the big switch and will become one of the proud new Cacko Daemons on this site.

Hello,

  i've been looking at cacko's developements and i was waiting at least for a beta before trying it.
well this week-end, trying to install a libgcc_s.so made my Z (sharp rom) unusable and i decided to try and flash it with cacko. Men what a job you did, i'm amazed  you must have spent days and nights on understanding how it works...

  i've not used it much til today but my Asus WL110 card works really fine and the whole environment is a wonderful feeling.

well there is a full procedure to "unbrick" a zaurus written by "pelon" for this. But as i've unbricked my sharp rom zaurus by installing a cacko, i'm quite confident in this process.

I've seen the un-bricking page(s) and have them bookmarked...  It's good to know that Cacko will also help to un-brick a Zaurus.   I guess that I'll try to find a copy of the 1.11JP ROM, and will try my hand at flashing this weekend.    

I don't want to hijack this thread - I'll post comments after I've made the switch.  I'm definitely looking forward to having a working copy of samba and cups!

Installed it yesterday after being unable to get OZ working properly.  Really frustrating when a product (OZ, in this case) is almost usuable.  In this case, can't get wireless working properly.    
 
Other than the eye candy being a bit different it seems to be just like the stock Sharp ROM.  Have the on/off button problem, presumably due to not zeroing the device beforehand. Need to find a solution for that, which doesn't involve zeroing the device, eventually.  For now 'shutdown -h now' is Good Enough.

All in all, and on only one day's use, I like it.

The installed went fine. Looks good. I hate to admit it, but the only trouble I've had was with games. The subhunt corupts the menus, requiring a hard boot to correct.

You must clear the device *after* you install cacko. If you don't, then you're running half-sharp, half-cacko and a lot of stuff isn't going to work properly.

I have the same rotation /mad fonts problem. I actually cleared the unit after installation.

Upon restoring my back up the on/off button would not work. It would not suspend from the tap screen either. I decided to zero it out again and test it without the back up. Everything worked great. On/off button working again. I decided to forget about my back up and reinstall programs and synchronize with my laptop.

I have not had time to test the mad/fonts upon rotation since I just flashed now. I will try to play around with it this weekend. I am a complete newbie and am so thankful for your easy instructions and help from this forum.

OK, the actual reason for the power button thing is this.

Standard Sharp ROM has apm as a binary. In the Cacko ROM we rename it to apm.rom and replace it with a script so that we can do things on suspend/resume and we call apm.rom to actually perform the suspend (with parameters passed to the script).

In the read only partition lies the apm.rom and apm script. These need linking to symbolic links in the read/write partition and this is done by unpacking the home image stored within the ROM. This happens when you clear the device as described.

If not done correctly only the link to apm exists, not apm.rom which means apm can't find the apm.rom (original binary) and can't therefore suspend the unit.

To test I would suggest starting a command prompt and using...

apm -s

This should suspend the unit if working correctly. If apm.rom is shown as missing then for some reason the clear process didn't work correctly although a successful clear simply restores a tarball to 'populate' the home area.

Note: Restoring a Sharp ROM backup removes the links and re-establishes the Sharp ROM based links so this will break the Cacko ROM. You need to restore PIM data by Synchronisation and copy other stuff back by files... Please see FAQs on OESF for more detailed information... have fun!
