Howto Pocketop Keyboard
« on: June 23, 2005, 05:37:52 pm »
Hi all. I've recently acquired a Pocketop keyboard ($10 Canadian, can't beat that!) but can't seem to get it to work. I've installed the irk-zaurus_0.11.0_arm.ipk package from the ZUG feed & I have a new input device listed, which I've changed the settings to pocketop + 5600 & restarted Qtopia so I have a cute icon of a kangaroo on my taskbar.

I've tried lining up the Z with the keyboard both before & after I select the icon &  select the On button, but nothing happens. There doesn't seem to be any visual indication on the keyboard that it's on (the keyboard is second hand & didn't come with a manual, I managed to find this one, but it's not much help). I'm not even sure if the keyboard itself is actually working. I try typing, hitting the Date/Address/etc buttons, nuttin'.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Well, after fiddling a bit I found that it must've been the keyboard's battery, 'cause I replaced that & it 'just worked'. kewl.

FWIW, one thing I had to do is install the fixed 5600 rotation fonts from here. Thanks a bunch to whoever's page that is!

Just a a question/observation to whoever has one of these keyboards. I guess the pda stand is pretty worthless for Z users, right? With the position of the IR port on the Z, the only way to use the Z is lying on it's left side, propped up on a book or hanky. Even if I were to set up a mirror for portrait use, the stand bracket is too small to fit the Z.

Good keyboard, anyway. Especially for $10

I have exactly the same configuration as you and am using the Pocketop on everyday's basis.

Yes, I use it lying on its left side. Where is the problem? Move the Z. to the left or right on the bracket until it finds its balance. The bigger battery might cause some unevenness on the back or imbalance, but moving it gently you'll eventually reach an equilibrium. Also, put the keyboard closer to the Z. so that IR ports align (you need that to achieve right positioning of the elbows/wrists anyway).

I was having problems cause I was trying to use the bracket while attached to the keyboard (which is intended for portrait mode I believe). As soon as I removed it & oriented the snap out wire to the bottom it does indeed hold the Z just fine (although it'd be a bit dicy trying to use it in a card or train , but hey, nothings perfect)

Thanks for the advice. takecare

Sorry, it was a private sale on our local usenet. And I wasn't even checking the groups that regularly, I just happend to be quickly catching up on messages when I spotted the post for it no more than an hour old, so I managed to be the first one to snap it up. Just blind luck on my part!
