Sync 5500 To Linux
« on: May 02, 2005, 09:37:34 am »
Hi,

I can sync with Windows Outlook via USB but I'm now trying to do the same with my SuSE 9.2 Desktop, Using QTopia 1.7, this does not see the Z.
I've followed the instructions from the SuSE Site, I can ping both ways so I know there is communication I just can't get them to sync.

I have tried various ROMs, OZ 3.5.3, OZ 3.5.2, Sharp 3.10 and currently have theKompanyrom Finale release 1.0.

Basicly all I want is:
Music
Spreadsheets ( compat with OoO calc but XL will do )
contacts  and calendar
Sync'ing and FTP to save removing the SD/CF Cards to copy files when using SuSE.

PS, I've just broken my Panasonic SD Card not sure if it was with removing it from the Z to a Card Reader or from using OZ 3.5.3 64 meg mem which puts the file system on the SD card. The card is now only read only so I am not able to format it, so I am guessing that in swapping it from the Z to the Reader I have maybe bent the card which as broken the internal connection to lock the card, Any one have a similar exp?

I pulled my hair out for quite awhile trying to make usb-networking work properly in Linux, it never really did.  I then bought a wireless network card for my Z (netgear Ma701) and all was well.  The new version of Kontact syncs with the PIM apps on my zaurus with VERY little configuration, and the fish protocol (files over ssh) allows me to seamlessly move files between the zaurus and my desktop.  I just launch Konqueror and type fish://root@<ZaurusIP>  and all is well.  The horrible, and proprietary Qtopia desktop sucks no matter what platform it is used on.

I hope this helps.

http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2004/12/jk_zaurus_usb.html

I followed this guide, and it seemed to work well. I have a SuSE 9.2 setup, and having followed the steps to a T, it worked perfectly.

Now, I couldn't get it to work with Qtopia 1.7 - I'm using Ko/Pi and Ka/Pi which is a much easier sync solution (as I understand it, Qtopia 1.7 does NOT work with the default sharp roms - I'm using tkcRom 2.0 Alpha).

Though if you're using one of the OZ roms, it should work ok.

To access the zaurus once you get these connections issue squared away, you just need to go to smb://zaurus (correct me if I'm wrong for OZ roms). It should auto mount with Samba (in theory).

I have basically used Mandriva 2005 Limited edition, which ships with KDE 3.3 and a usable Kitchensync that will correctly synchronize Kontact with the Opie PIMs.

Always remember a few things:

a) networking Linux with a Opie Z: http://snoop.alphanet.ch/?q=users/mussi/za...networking.html is the reference I use, but I'll update it soon with regard to Mandriva 2005
Networking on the Z: The weak and the inept buy a USB card solely for this, the real hardcore Zaurii fans simply configure usbd0 with 3.5.3 and set the DNS servers (as the DHCP on the Z will not 'see' them through NAT)

And voila, most stuff works dandy. Synchronizing may require you to acknowledge a few changes in the address book, but else, there's little extra work required now.

What rom are you using?

I just installed openssh on my 5500 (latest sharp rom), but when i try ¨fish://"i get a ¨perl not found¨ error.  Fish works on other hosts though.
You said that you use kontact. I just installed the latest version of suse (9.3), and noticed kontact --thats what got me interested in syncing again
However, how do you tell kontact to use the zaurus? It only gives me the option of ¨/dev/pilot¨.

Thanks

I think it's amazing and very sad that many years after the introduction of a Linux based PDA that people are still having many problems trying to sync with Linux systems. What is equally amazing and sad to me is that people with the knowledge to help generally act as if it is the fault of the end user that this situation exists. "Linux PDA's will most likely remain a developer's toy until this changes." I know that the ROM changes Sharp made didn't help, but neither did the attitude that syncing made simple is for weenies and lusers. Hopefully the makers of Linux based cell phones will do a better job. If I sound a little annoyed about this, it's because I am. I raised this topic once before on the old Sharp devnet so excuse me while I go put on the asbestos suit.

After reading this thread I guess I need to apologise for whining - people are working on it.
