not sure about the tiff stuff, worst scenario would be you wont be able to display tiff images I guess, but try installing libtiff and see if that helps.

as for the i18n warning, that one can be safely ignored but if it bothers you, then you can symlink it to /home/QtPalmtop/i18n/en/libsl.qmid and dont worry about the // since linux is smart enough to figure that it should only be /

now the important bit. set LANG to en. in an xterm, type:

Code: [Select]
LANG=en
and then launch abiword

the next xqt-apps.cramfs will fix that

Quote
Code: [Select]
...generating gdk-pixbuf.loaders
g_module_open() failed for /opt/QtPalmtop/lib/gtk-2.0/2.4.0/loaders/libpixbufloader-tiff.so: /opt/QtPalmtop/lib/gtk-2.0/2.4.0/loaders/libpixbufloader-tiff.so: undefined symbol: TIFFReadRGBAImageOriented

There is still a message when i run abiword or thunderbird :
Code: [Select]
could not open translation file /home/QtPalmtop//i18n/ja_JP.eucJP/libsl.qmid
(note that the double / is in the error message)

I don't know if it is because of that, but the menu in abiword are very very strange (squares with little circle).

and one more time : thank you veru much meanie for your works.

I *.tar.gz'd them try now, maybe all is ok? My firefox actually asked to download them this time instead of showing "text", please let me know, if this doesnt do it, then they will get zipped.

Its a feature of the newer webservers and browsers to do on the fly compression and decompression during downloads. They use a magic file to determine known mime types to do it properly. Unfortunately the default magic files on most servers only know the common mime types such as .zip extensions and use a guessing method to determine other compressed or unknown formats. I guess, they guessed wrongly (pun intended).

Bam, to fix it you need to edit your web server's mime.types and add gz and ipk to the
application/octet-stream line or just hosts them as zip files. Now you know why my ipk files are all available as zip files instead of ipk files on my main mirror site

thanks, LANG=en is ok for sylpheed, and abiword etc..

Nothing about config, but if you want (like me) a better e-mail client for your Z than the available from the sharp rom, sylpheed with the meanie's xqt package is quite fast to launch and easy to use.
I wanted first to use thunderbird, like with my laptop, but thunderbird is very very slow, compare to sylpheed on the Z.

Meanie,
it seems that there is an issue (at least for me !) about the cramfs jumbo package :

I was not able to reboot properly after it was installed. the Z just show the Sharp picture for eternity..

I have then restored a backup without any xqt install (this time) and the reboot=>ok

After the cramfs installation, i tried to reboot => same pb. I was able to connect to the Z via the USB connection and openssh while the Z was showing the startup screen since a long time. here is the outpout from ps command:
Code: [Select]

as the libjpeg.so.62 is a part of the xqtapps cramfs, i mounted the xqtjumbo and the xqtapps cramfs image by hand (there was not mounted at the

time), kill the failing qpe and qeserver process . and then the boot process continue. and was ok.

why the qpe.sh script need this lib from the X/Qt install ???

Note that before reboot,
- the startx command works,
- abiword fail to load with a libgthread-2.0.so.0 error, (it was working with the first install ??)
- sylpheed, dillo, xmms, gimp, ethereal, thunderbird and firefox works.

PS : I tried two time the same thing (restore a working backup, reboot , install xqt jumbo cramfs package , try to reboot) to be sure about that.

Similar wierdness here - hung on reboot - restored backup and tried again - same thing.  third time I installed Debian using latest xqt-debian-install.sh file.  Now I have to pull the battery to reboot - but it does not hang?  I am having problems running some of the settings apps also - like Network and System Info?

ok, so i m not alone..
After booting with the workaround above, there is some strange stuff. There is something running in background (there is the sand glass on the task bar)??

the network setup don't want to run.. and it is possible to umount /home/xqtjumbo but it not possible to umount /home/xqtapps

there is something like :

umount ioctl : LOOP_CLR_FD:device busy
/home/xqtapps device busy

sorry everone, I made a mistake with the xqt-apps.cramfs image. Please do not install it until the next fixed release is announced.

I am currently away from home on an assignment and have limited access to the net so won't be posting anything until I get home, but for those who already installed xqt-apps, here is what you need to do to fix it:

So I'm still wondering which method I should install if I haven't done so already - the
new cramfs option or the previous ipk/tar option? Is one easier/faster/better performance,
etc.?

thanks,

For my experience, installing the cramfs package on a clean Z (ie without a previous X/Qt install) is very very easy. I didn't have the required flash memory available to try the ipk jumbo package. if you want to try just wait the updated apps cramsfs.
About the performances, X launch is ok, some apps too (like sylpheed). but thunderdbird (for me) is realy to long to launch.
Last thing, it may be easier to uninstall the ipk package than remove all the links created by the cramfs setup ?.

Basically the difference between the ipk and the cramfs jumbo xqt is as follows:

ipk file:
takes long time to install (30mins - 1 hour)
requires 40MB space + tmp space on main memory
has to be installed to main memory (unless you use xipk)
might run a little bit faster (depends on model)
can be uninstalled from package manager gui

cramfs:
takes less than 1 minute to install
 uses about 15MB
 can be installed anywhere
have to use command line to install (need a console)
may run a little bit slower because files are all compressed
can be uninstalled from package manager gui (ver 0.2)

OK, as a self-professed uneducated-in-the-ways-of-linux person even though I still love my Zaurus 3000, I would like some help with this...

What am I doing wrong???

I downloaded the ipk of the Jumbo X/QT package and clicked install package.

I am now getting an Install Error that says "This package seems to depends on other packages. Please install them, too."

Then I finish the install and I reboot the Zaurus.

Then when I try to run any of the new programs other than any of the new icons...it shows the icon exploding like everything else but I get the system stall while beneath it says debian not installed and minimo not installed etc.... it only runs Start X and X/Qt Server, but it locks up when I try to exit out of those applications.

I am running the Cacko ROM -- does that make a big difference in this? I would love to be able to run all of this, even if just to have some alternatives....

Thanks,

Poet

Jumbo Xqt Package

The cramfs images are finished and just need to be put up on Bam's mirror site.

The xqt-gtk-jumbo.cramfs hasn't changed much. I just added an uninstall feature so once you have it installed, it will appear in the qInstaller uninstall list.

The old xqt-apps.cramfs has been split into xqt-mozilla.cramfs and a new xqt-apps.cramfs

The xqt-mozilla.cramfs contains Mozilla Firefox 0.9 and Mozilla Thunderbird 0.6. Because it  is just a port over to the Zaurus, there is no optimisation and thus it loads pretty slow but runs reasonably once loaded. These two apps are for die hard Mozilla fans.

The xqt-apps contains an updated bundle of applications:

abiword 2.0 which is a word processor
dillo 0.8 which is a fast but simple web browser
ethereal 0.10.2 is a network sniffer and analyzer
flfm 0.3 is a X file manager
fltdj 0.7 is a PIM application
gimp 1.2.5 is a graphical image manipulation tool
gqview 1.4.2 is an image viewer
gnumeric 1.2.2 is a spreadsheet tool
grisbi 0.5 is an accounting package
minimo 1.6 is an optimised and customised port of Mozilla
nedit 5.4 is a powerful text editor
sylpheed 0.9.99 is an email client
xchat 2.0.5 is an irc chat client
xmms 1.2.10 is a multimedia player capable of playing sound and video

I hope this set of application is going to be useful.

Finally, java.cramfs is a full blown Java Runtime (blackdown JRE 1.3.1) which runs in command line and also in graphics mode with awt and swing in X/Qt. I also added jikes and kopi compiler so you can write and compile java applications on the Zaurus and run them. In addition, I also included two sample java applications, Hd Pad and Hd Crawler. These run quite slowly due to java being very slow on the Zaurus. Hd Pad is a simple text editor and Hd Crawler is a download tool that can download images and files from entire yahoo and msn groups. It also has a few other tools for splitting and combining files as well as generic url sequence generation...

Have fun running all these X apps on your Zaurus using the Sharp ROM.
