Oz "zimage" On Hentges?
« on: July 02, 2005, 10:36:55 am »
Hello all. I am on day 3 of being a proud Zaurus owner (but a long-time Debian user) and, after getting over the usual hurdles, I have my Z doing pretty much what I expected of it using the Hentges rom. I am pleased!

Like others, mine doesn't always resume from a suspend. It takes a lot out of the Coolness Factor when you bop over to your co-worker's cube (who uses an x5) to show off your shiny Z and it's comatose. "Hey, look at that reboot... cool!"

The announcement on openzaurus.org on 6/30 is that they have a kernel upgrade to fix this. Could this work in Hentges? If not, does anyone have a tweak or workaround to the current (r19) kernel?

Also, I installed a kernel module for ext3. Can the sd card be formatted as ext3 for the cardfs so fsck doesn't run after every reboot?

My humble thanks in advance.

Edit 8:24PM: I just found a thread for doing this in OZ/Common   Oops

Well you can try it on your own. It is possible just to flash the kernel. If it dont fits, you can flash the original kenel back.
The other possibility is to wait. I am sure, CoreDump will surely apply the patches for suspend/resume to his system. But for now, he is temporarily offline because he changed his appartement and waiting for internet in his new home.
Cheers,
Sam

Well I tried flashing just the kernel onto my Hentges system...

All I got was the two lights came on for a few seconds then went off again..

I am just looking around the boards to see what the hell that means

I tried a full flash with the new kernal the hentges rom and new card fs and still no joy.

I don't think it is flashing the kernel as I still have the right arrow suspend problem

I have downloaded the kernel several times now

I think when the lights flash very briefly it means that the files were not found on the card. You could check that the files on the CF card are called exactly zImage and initrd.bin (sometimes graphical file managers and the like hide extensions, so best check from the command line). Obviously there will only be zImage if you're flashing just the kernel.

You can confirm the kernel you have from the command lie by doing "uname -a", and check the build date. I get:Linux collie 2.4.18-rmk7-pxa3-embedix #1 Thu, 30 Jun 2005 11:18:23 +0200 armv4l unknown

Flashing just the kernel is much quicker than doing the full system, so check the uname.

Oh the public humiliation of it....

Damn new lappy,  had got extentions hidden..

In my defense I would argue that if work did not keep swapping my laptop it would be set up properly...

Failing that I will blame a couple of very nice beers

Ooooooooooooo I can scroll right now

Do I take it that you are able to use the new OZ kernel? I was having lunch at Panera today and Z-surfing in Konqueror on their wireless. Once when using the scroll button the Zaurus crashed.... poof gone! Is this what you are refering to?

Methinks I will try it. I'll report back.

Apart from several stern warnings during bootup that I am "booting the wrong kernel" it seems to be working:

root@collie:~# uname -a
Linux collie 2.4.18-rmk7-pxa3-embedix #1 Thu, 30 Jun 2005 11:18:23 +0200 armv4l unknown

I'll report back with any problems <fingers crossed, touch wood>

Edit: A quick edit of /etc/init.d/checkversion to replace all entries of the old kernel with the new one (2.4.18-rmk7-pxa3-embedix-3.5.3) has fixed the bootup warnings.

No resume problems to report.
