As you said earlier that lirc and lirc-modules are installed by default in hentges rom, Can you point me to the install rom that you use so that I can just have it by default? The default as I see it from almost 7 times of reflashing, points to that they are not installed by default and attempts to install them fails as well.
I 'think' I'm using the oz-opie-collie_T3-RC-1-EN.tar.gz that was in the 'do not use' folder on the hentges server. It's guessing it's now the T3 in the regular files... I'm not sure if anything would be different involving the lirc-modules? It doesn't really matter now because you have the modules installed.

I know it comes with the opie-irdaapplet, and irda-utils so just go ahead and place the lirc ipk on your CF-card and install using --force-depends. You will still get errors... ignore them and follow the instructions for the belkin ipk. Then check the files and symlinks that I've listed for you, and make sure you have the:
/etc/IRK.conf symlinked to /media/card/opt/QtPalmtop/etc/skel/IRK.conf
before you reboot.

Greg and CoreDump, thanks for your time. Again, I must refer to my earlier post that lirc is *not* present or installed, based on the assumption that if it is installed by default, the lirc node or config file would be present. I'm hoping to hear back from CoreDump on whether lirc and lirc-modules are indeed installed by default.

So, let me get this straight. Despite all the errors I've encountered, I should carry on?   well, actually I did for a few of the install runs and after reboot, I still don't get the input method for the ir keyboards besides the 3 defaults.

Well ... ... ... I'll retry once again. I'll just reflash my z again. I got so ... that I reflashed my Z with Cacko rom. Not that I am giving up ... yet. I just had to see something else work on my z to have the faith or strength to retry. grrr

EDIT: It was the pdaXrom that I flashed out of frustration ... not that it mattered.  ... ok ... any final words before I flash back to Hentges?

Just reinstalled hentges...

root@collie:/# cat /etc/hentges.version
[ROM] OZ 3.5.3 / OPIE 1.2.0 ROM Release T3, [20050729]

So we are using "slightly" different rom versions... but nevertheless ... I'll install cardfs now and see how it goes ... (note to self: ignore all all errors ... )

I did exactly as listed and am now waiting to reboot.

I got "Cannot satisfy the following dependencies for irk-belkin:" lirc

Should I continue with the reboot as stated in the steps herein?

EDIT: I went ahead and reboot, reenabled the feeds and did a ipkg update ... presto ... still no input method for the ir keyboards!

I give up.

Thanks all for your help.  Really appreciate your time and suggestions.

Snappy,

Sorry to hear about your troubles.  Actually, I am using the Targus keyboard, so it may be that the Belkin model uses lirc.  If you're planning on trying this again, I can suggest a couple things. . .

1. Did you install these packages to the SD card?  Did you run ipkg from the command line?  If so, were you sure to follow it up with ipkg-link (the Package Manager does this for you)?  This would explain why things were not linked properly.

2. The "-force-overwrite" option for ipkg should remove the "file already exists" error (it might be a good idea to back up /dev/lirc first).

Good luck. . .

After reading this in acpkendo's last post (Thanks acpkendo, for bringing this to my attention)

Here's an ipk I have modified for you (or anyone who would like to test it). I've removed lirc from the depends to prevent all your installation problems. I don't 'think' lirc is needed for this, as it isn't needed for the targus version.

You will still have to copy it to your CF-card and disabled the feeds, then do ipkg update and install it from the command line. You will not need to use --force-depends with this ipk. You will have to symlink:

ipkg-link add irk-belkin

and

ln -s /media/card/opt/QtPalmtop/etc/skel/IRK.conf /etc/IRK.conf

Then restart opie.

It's been installed without any problems on a poodle and collie... but I can't check to see if it works without a keyboard.

Edit: ipk has been removed

Hi Greg, just tried ... installed good.  ... restart of opie resulted in hangup. Restarted Z ... -> blackscreen of death!  ...

Seem to be similar to what samac encountered earlier on the thread ...

My hentges is a fresh install. hmmm ... anything I should look out for?

hey! It just worked. I uninstalled ... reinstalled ... and before restarting ... went through the  post by samac about copying and linking IRK.conf somewhere ... and poof ... restart ... noticed an error about /home/root/Settings/IRK.conf ... which I manually made a symlink ... I removed that. Restarted ... and IRK appeared with no black screen! hmmm ...

I'll test out with the keyboard now!

Hmmm ... tried it out ... the PocketTop mode produces some wrong characters while Belkin mode produces nothing when the keyboard is typed. This seems to be like what I encountered previously while trying to install IRK for SHARP ROM until I used a "j" variant of IRK.

The Belkin keyboard I use is F8U1500. How can I extract the IRK.conf from the "j" variant IRK ipkg?

hmmm ... copied the IRK.conf, libirk.so.1.0.0 file from the j variant over and overwrite the installed files. No go. Now the input method disappeared!

ok, let me redo the installation again and see how it goes.

Don't use the libirk.so just try the IRK.conf.

Attach the IRK.conf from this j variant or give me the link and I will compare the two. I have a little extra time this morning.
