Model Advice

I'm trying to decide between a sl-c750, sl-c760, sl-c1000, or sl-c3100. I current use a Ipaq h4150 and own a sl-5500. The h4150 fits nicely in my pant pocket, however, it does sound like Familiar Linux will not be ready for the h4150 for a significant time. The sl-5500 is just too large for me to carry daily. I'm wondering about the size of the c models. Also, how much use can one get out of the models without the hard drive? Can you install many applications without a hard drive? The models without the hard drive seem more reasonably priced. I'd be using it primarily for PIM, but suspect the presence of Linux will cause me to think up other uses for the pda.

My advice is to get the 760/860.  Since the size of the device is important to you, the sl-cx60 can be configured to use a small battery.  The small battery is good enough for pim duty and is small enough to easily fit in the pocket.  When you do need some more battery time, you have the option of the big battery.  There's plenty of things you can do with a sl-cx60 and 1gb SD card.

The 3100 is very nice, but it is not pocketable the way you want.  It's good for a jacket pocket, cargo pants or a belt clipped case.

Thanks for the input. Too bad the sl-a300 is so hard to find. It seems pretty small.

Yeah -- I have to second Bluedevils' advice.  I've had a 760 for about 2 years now, recently added a 1 GB SD card, and haven't really needed any more storage space.  I don't know whether I agree with his advice about the smaller battery though.  I had a 5500 for a couple years, and wasn't really able to use a WiFi adaptor for more than a couple minutes without killing the battery.  I don't have those worries with the 760 & larger battery.  I do carry it around in my pants pocket, even with the large battery, and rarely notice it, unless I'm crawling around on the floor (I have a 2 year old daughter).  I've never really considered swapping for the smaller battery.

Start with the 760, and learn how to use it.  By the time you're ready to use the additional capabilities of the 3100s the price will be down.

I'm starting to think about a 3100 myself -- more for USB hosting capabilities than for the HD.  There's lots of things I could do with USB hosting.
