After Flash Zaurus 3100 Will Not Turn On
« Reply #15 on: December 21, 2005, 06:17:58 pm »
Ok. Now Trying this:

1) Remove battery and unhook AC power, leave the battery hatch open and unlocked
2) Press D+M,
3) While holding down firm on D+M, attach AC while holding keys down for 3-5 seconds ...
4) This pops up the service dialog menu, with about 3 pages of menus and options
5) The bootflag is currently, "----"
6) Turn off zaurus by pressing front-side on/off button
8) AC is still attached
9) Click the reset switch
10) Put battery back in, close hatch, lock (The battery light comes on)
11) Attempt to turn on by pressing the front side "on/off" button
12) Nothing happens

I held the "on/off" button for 15 seconds, but no response.
I have not tried doing another NAND backup restore yet. Should I give that a whirl?

yes. Please do this.
If it's still dead, it looks like it's time to call your dealer   .

Actually, excellent news. The problem appears to be that it would not boot normally with the battery dead. I let it charge for about 1 hour then tried to start the unit by simply pressing the on/off button. To my surprise, it showed me the Sharp loading screen!

Now, it will not go beyond the sharp loading screen and just sits there. I must normally hit the reset button to stop the unit. So I feel that I must flash it again but this is quite acceptable. I tried getting the normal 4 choice update menu and it worked! It looks like my Zaurus is running well.

I am certain that after the bootflag issue you mentioned, it was merely the low battery that prevented a proper start up for some reason.  Thank you very very much for all of your help, both you TriSoft and others. I will let you know if I succeed in getting Debian onto my Zaurus.

What happens when you use this option?

SERVICE (3/3)

      7. EXTRA MENU
         1. 1. ZAURUS TEST:

            EXTRA MENU(1/6)
               1. 1. NAND Flash (Full)

Is it supposed to check the whole nand for errors or is it supposed to erase the whole nand?

well, I was too curious and tried it out. It wiped my NAND clean and the Z doesn't turn on anymore, no more charging light either. I guess I got my answer
Let's see how good my backups are...

Well, here is the story. I have successfully installed debian onto my system, but there are new problems. I cannot get Opie to install anymore. I run through the install describe generally here:
http://openzaurus.org/wordpress/installation/sl-c3000/

And using these files here for in the install:
http://ewi546.ewi.utwente.nl/mirror/www.op....5.4-RC/sl3100/

Opie installs down to the command line but it will not start up a GUI session. Any ideas what the problem is?

From the Opie command line I installed Debian on my system but there is no GUI that I can start, so its kind of useless.
