Mplayer has a \'quiet\' option for console output. The Mplayer homepage has tons of documentation on all the options.
As for the Mplayer Shell, it works fine with Jeode on the standard Sharp ROMs. What ROM/JVM are you using? The only thing I have seen is that Mplayer Shell exits after finishing playing a video.
