Pdaxrom For C3000 Beta2
« Reply #150 on: June 09, 2006, 04:35:13 am »
Thanks Reaper!

Well, I'm wondering now if my HD really is buggered or if its a faulty kernel, script or program in pdaXromb2. Unfortunately I still think it more likely my drive is knackered

I was using Cacko for almost a year before switching to pdaX and I never had any fs errors on boot or during use. I've only had a few quick goes with OZ and I didn't repartition the MD for it either so maybe its not a fair comparison but again I never saw fsck complaining. Also, I checked the md5sum of some big files I've copied onto my current pdaXrom partition and they match up with my PC, which is confusing me.

I've had to run a manual (D+B boot) fsck on it every day since I installed pdaXrom- surely this isn't normal?

I'm not sure if its been mentioned in this thread already but there is a bug I've noticed (that isn't mentioned in Meanies docs) and that is the Z goes into suspend after you've changed the time on the matchbox panel.

Your situation isn't normal, that's for sure. Try replacing your MD, 1 or 2 Gb Cf cards are now almost as cheap as dirt. I got the following errors after my "kitchen reflashing"  :

1) I'm unable to reboot in any other way than reset/battery removal (don't remember, though, maybe it was with MD and usual beta1 also);

2) XMMS on some tracks overloads CPU and starts to lag;

3) Fn very often doesn't work, and so do several other secondary key functions;

4) There's no overclocking spreadsheet so OC doesn't work either;

5) SD driver from Sharp works, but, strange enough, it allows to write onto SD card only when using Z as USB card reader. Reading is OK;

6) Firefox (or DeerPark) is MUCH slower and MUCH less stable than in previous releases, it aborts very often, and, what's much worse, doesn't free memory after that.

7) Also I was unable to install and use zgcc image, but I think that's my fault. It mounts, but commands return "unknown command".

Maybe there are some other mistakes as well, I just don't remember now.

Oh, yes, 8) Suspend/resume is REALLY flaky. It's a widespread mistake with 2.4.x pdaX versions, if I'm correct.

Overclocking, the Fn key and writing to SD card all seem to be working fine on my install but I'm having the same memory/instability issues with FireFox you describe.

Reboot and Halt don't work under b2 until you apply the fixed scripts as detailed on Meanies pdaxrom customisation page. b2 didn't even come with a halt script.

http://www.users.on.net/~hluc/myZaurus/custom-pdaxrom.html

Again, it seems my my desktop is disappearing before my eyes. I'd just put some icons and links on the ROX desktop and now a couple of them just have blank link icons instead of the proper pixmap.

its a shame there's nothing like spinrite for linux

Another bug I think I've found is that the Light+Power settiings tool doesn't seem to work. I've set suspend to 0 (never?) minutes when on AC power yet it is still suspending after 5 or 10 mins.

Looks like I'll be putting Cacko back on to see if I can get a reliable system back until a good pdaXrom gets released for C3000. Will I have to enter the D+B menu and manually re-partition the drive before I reflash Cacko?

Shame about that link! If anybody else has a working link I'd appreciate it very much if you could post it. I would've thought going from pdaXrom back to Cacko would've been quite well documented already.

On the page you linked to, and also in Meanies doc, it talks about updating the NAND. I've never updated the NAND on my C3k but its second hand so maybe the previous owner did. How do I check what version of NAND I have? Also, what got fixed between v1.01 and 1.11 of the C3000 NAND. Could an old NAND cause the MD problems I've been having?

EDIT

Thanks for that link humit! I presume that if I want to install Cacko I can just use cackos hdd1image.tgz in step 5 instead of the trisoft one? I've actually never tried the official SHARP rom for the C3000 as I've always read Cacko is better out of the box.

I'd MUCH rather be running pdaXrom of course. Maybe if I update my NAND (if it needs it) and install pdaXrom again I might have more luck (wishful thinking I'd guess)

I would imagine that I should just be able to do steps 1-4 in that link and then I should be able to install Cacko as per usual.

That doc really, really should be stored somewhere more visible and permanent- on the ZUG, OZ, Cacko and pdaXrom sites doc sections for a start. There's no way you can guess that sort of stuff (well, I certainly couldn't).

Now I just need to find out what version NAND I have on already. Has anybody tried installing the C3000 b2 on a machine with the old NAND? From his docs I'm presuming that Meanie already had 1.11 on his.

If it wasn't for helpful posters on these forums and a talented dev community I know that my C3000 would've been a (very promising) waste of time and money. I glimpsed what my C3000 can really do now and I can't wait to get it running properly with pdaXrom!

EDIT

You can find out the NAND version of your C3000 and do a HDD checksum from under the D+M menu. Turns out I was running 1.01 so I'm going to update now and re-install pdaXrom. Anyone else wanting to update their C3000 NAND can get it from

http://support.ezaurus.com/sl-c3000/update...ate/kyodaku.asp

card_update_3000111 its called but unfortunately its in .exe format. Why do even people who produce Linux only computers presume everyone is running Windows?

Oh no!

I'd just revisited this thread as I was going to copy those recovery instructions and send them to maslovsky so he could add them to the Cacko docs on the web but now that link has disappeared! We need to recover those instructions then make sure they get archived somewhere safely. Anybody got a copy or know where they could be now?

Thanks!

Got it!
(I knew it would kinda come in handy...)

Returning Your Zaurus SL-C3000 To It's Factory Settings
Much of the information here came from the helpful members of the Zaurus User Group forum with special thanks to Jonathan.

The Story: In a moment of terror I rebooted my Z and got an HDD1 error. I did a Hard Reset by holding down the OK button while powering up. Then I chose menu items 3/1/Y. I ended up with a HDD3 error. I later discovered that when I installed debian and changed a read only file, the reset conflicted with those changes. Believing that the 3000 would work much like my 5500 I assumed I could restore to factory settings with a startup trick. I had no idea that by wiping out my hard drive I'd lose everything. But that's just what I did.
The Solution: Warning! You could brick your zaurus and have to send it back to Sharp!
Disclaimer! I cannot be responible for damage to your zaurus!
Warning! You will lose All stored information.

This method should only be tried if you are at your wits end, are a curious geek like me, or completely insane.

The essential software is contained in the 16Mb ROM called the NAND and about 20Mb on the hard drive. You will need the following files:
NAND (this contains a boot loader, the Service/Diagnosis Menus, an emergency linux system, and the basic filesystem. You most certainly won't need this but it's included here for completeness)

http://downloads.conics.net/pda/zaurus-sl-...iginal-backups/

Software (hdd1.tar.gz)

http://www.xlfag.com/zaurus/hdd1.tar.gz

English translation provided by TriSoft (see Backup for Download zip file)

http://www.trisoft.de/en_c3000howto.htm

You might also want to replace the kernel so you can watch the Z boot up just like on your linux box.

http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=e...hl%3Den%26lr%3D

Once again, this is not the way to rescue a hung Z. These are extreme measures and are not recommended!

Begin every step with the Z powered down.

Disconnect the adapter. Remove the battery cover but slide the latch back to the closed position.

Restore the NAND:
If you have not messed with the read-only files in your ROM you should skip this step.
This is the most dangerous thing you can do to your Z!

Unzip the NAND and put the .DBK file on a CF card. It doesn't matter if the card is not empty. Put the card in the slot. Remove the battery. Hold down the D and M keys and replace the battery. If the diagnostic menu doesn't come up try again. CONNECT THE ADAPTER. Do not choose Update Menu. Page down and choose the Backup Restore Menu. Choose NAND Flash Restore. If it finds your file press OK twice (twice because this is very dangerous). Watch the progress bar and wait until you see Restore...OK. Press cancel. Remove the adapter. Remove the battery, replace it, and check to be sure the Z powers up again.

Substitute a new kernel: This step is optional and dangerous! Put the Special Kernel and update.sh on a CF card and insert it into the slot. Replace the adapter. Hold down the OK key and power on. From the Service Menu choose 4 then CF then Y. Whenit prompts you, do a Soft Reset. Remove the adapter. Remove the battery. Wait 30 seconds. With the point of the stylus gently press the submerged button in a tiny black rectangle next to where the battery would be. You should feel a slight click. Replace the battery and power on. You should see the boot process and Tux the Linux penguin instead of the Zaurus logo.

Partition the hard drive:
Insert a CF card. Remove the battery. While holding down the D and B keys, replace the battery. Release the keys and wait for a prompt. Login as root. Input the following:
    # sfdisk -uC /dev/hdc <<EOF
    # 0,203,83
    # ,816,83
    # ,6916,c
    # EOF

    # mke2fs -j /dev/hdc1
    # mke2fs -j /dev/hdc2
    # mkfs.vfat -F 32 /dev/hdc3

Replace the Software:
Put hdd1.tar.gz on a CF card and put it in the slot. Remove the battery. While holding down the D and B keys, replace the battery. Release the keys and wait for a prompt. Login as root. Input the following:
   # mount /dev/hdc1 /hdd1
   # mount /dev/hdc2 /hdd2
   # cd /
   # gzip -cd /mnt/cf/hdd1.tar.gz |tar xvf -

When you receive the #prompt again remove and replace the battery. Replace the adapter. Hold down the OK key and power on. From the Service Menu choose 3 and then 1 and then Y. After several minutes you should have a fresh Japanese machine. When it boots up, click on the words in the center of the screen. Then on the cross hairs. You will then be left in the date setting application. hit the Home key to get to the menus.

Assert your Western Imperialist Tendencies:
Unzip the English translation and put it in a directory called Backup_Files on the CF card. Insert it into your Japanese zaurus and go to Settings (the middle tab at the top of the page). Find the green icon that looks like a sheet of paper that goes both ways. Click on it and then on the lower of the two blue dots. From the left drop down list in the middle of the screen choose CF. The English translation backup should appear. Now click the lower center button. In the popup choose the left button. After watching the progress bar, the Z should boot up into beautiful English.
As a convenience you can download mkhdd.sh which will perform steps 4 and 5. Just put it on your CF card. You must have the card in the slot before you D/B-On to get to the #prompt. Then just type /mnt/cf/mkhdd.sh and follow the prompts.

http://www.xlfag.com/zaurus/mkhdd.sh

That's it. I've made no hyperlinks in text itself to make it easier to edit. Hope that helps.

P.S. Sorry for offtopic, but I suppose that the most long-lasting (though not the most convenient) solution of "C3000 pdaX problem" is to replace 16 Mb NAND chip with 128 Mb one. I've got this chip and gave it to Maslovsky for exploring (a friend of him has got programmable hot air blower I'm dreaming of...) Sashz says that C+D combination with the replacement of this chip would be able to solve most of the C3000-specific problems...

I got into the situation where I wanted to revert from pdaXrom and found that I needed to make some modifications to the instructions to make them work for me, especially since some of the required software above seems to be unavailable - I'll summarize the steps:

1. Get the following:
card_update_3000111.exe form
Quote
http://support.ezaurus.com/sl-c3000/update...0updatecard.asp
Scroll down on the Japanese page, the link is somewhere in the middle of the page. That basically gives you a fresh ROM to install. Extract the .exe file on a DOS/WIN box. Put the following files on an empty SD card:
hdimage1.tgz
initrd.bin
mversion.bin
updater.sh
zImage.bin

2. Restore the partitioning:
Insert a CF card. Remove the battery. While holding down the D and B keys, replace the battery. Release the keys and wait for a prompt. Login as root (no password).
Input the following:
    # sfdisk -uC /dev/hda <<EOF
    # 0,203,83
    # ,816,83
    # ,6916,c
    # EOF
(Note: My C3000 needed the partitions to be called hda1...hda2 instead of hdc1...hdc3)
    # mke2fs -j /dev/hda1
    # mke2fs -j /dev/hda2
    # mkfs.vfat -F 32 /dev/hda3

3. Restore the software:
Put in the SD Card where you extracted card_update_3000111.exe to into the SD card slot. Unplug your Z, take out the battery. Push the reset button, plug in the power cord, put in the battery. At that point I usually press the OK button, then put the battery lock switch into the 'On' position and then push the 'On' button. You should get the Service Menu. Choose 4 then SD Card then Y

The Z will reboot and restore the software and reboot again. Very likely it will hang after the second reboot; in that case repeat to unplug your Z, take out the battery. Push the reset button, plug in the power cord, put in the battery. Press the OK button, then put the battery lock switch into the 'On' position and then push the 'On' button. You should get the Service Menu. 3 and then 1 and then Y.

After several minutes you should have a fresh Japanese machine. When it boots up, click on the words in the center of the screen. Then on the cross hairs. You will then be left in the date setting application. hit the Home key to get to the menus

From here you can proceed to revert your Z into English as outlined above.

Many thanks to all who have contributed to this and especially Reaper for his summary - it really helped to turn my Z back into a working piece of equipment again!

Okay, so I have now flashed the pdaXrom onto my C3000 too.

The look and feel of pdaXrom is better for me than QTopia from Cacko ROM.

So far I have not installed any additional software packages, just the plain pdaXrom installation.

Some first questions:

* Suspend does not work when lid is closed. Is this intentional? If not, what can be wrong?

* Some applications come up with a window larger than the screen. A "maximise" fits them to screen. But on next startup they are too large again (e.g. Sylpheed, gqview...). Any way around that?

* Running applicatoins used to be shown in the taskbar on QTopia. On pdaXrom they are not. I find it nice to have running applicatoins available on one klick. Is there a way to configure this?

* I tried if there is a task switcher like in Cacko. Pressing Shift-home. But then the screen went blank, USB port LED switched off (meaning power off?) and the HDD LED stays lit. Suspend? With On/Off button it does not come to life again.
But when pressing the "Menu" key the HDD LED flickers again and hub power comes up. but screen is black stil... what happens there?
Now I have to do a hard reset I guess...

* Are there any "users" predefined (such as "zaurus" on Cacko ROM)? Should one work as a user or do most people here work as root? I's prefer working as a user, but would I have to switch to root (meaning terminating X, logging out, logging back in and restarting X) when I want to modify a setting or do anything else which cannot easily be done via sudo on the console?

* In USB settings one can choose between CF and SD for USB-storage.
How can I access the internal MD via USB-storage from outside (provided I have an OS running which supports ext2)?

* Which feed(s) are recommended for the first steps after installing pdaXrom on C3000? I'm mainly looking for productivity tools as always :-)

So much for now. Looking forward to your replies.

Thank you!

I would've got the same questions.

Anyone?

TIA!
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=136158\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Well, I use X11/pdaX from the very beginning (winter 2003/2004), so I think I could answer at least few of these questions.

1) For me, suspend DOES work when the lid is closed, and it's always happens at most inconvenient circumstances (e.g. listening to music); as I said before, suspend on 2.4 pdaX is very flaky anyway - rarely it works as it's ought to, but more frequently it's needed to press power button 2-3 times to turn it on. For turning off, use suspend from start menu - it's somehow safer. That's my experience, I don't know why it happens.

2) About large application windows. There may be other workaround, but AFAIK, one has to recompile these apps with proper settings - they weren't written for VGA screen. Zumi does it with PIM apps - look at his SoC page at mail.pdaxrom.org .

3) With matchbox it isn't that simple. Try other WM's like XFCE or KDE. With the latter it works for sure, but it's pretty slow. To switch between apps in Matchbox, try usual Alt-Tab.

4) PdaX philosophy is the following: be omnipotent and responsible for all the consequences. So it's natural the default user is root. It fits me very much, as I became really crazy because of countless limitations at Cacko. After all, I always can reflash. I keep "emergency kit" with .conf files, fonts, /etc scripts and alike on my SD card, so restoring my Z after reflashing is a matter of less than an hour, and most of this time is spent at downloading and installing new versions of programs not included.

5) Next versions of pdaX should have the opportinity to use MD as USB storage. There may be other solutions as well, but I know nothing about it.

6) Download gcc image and mount it - it contains most of needed stuff. Install missing libs and apps by request. I highly recommend autoconf. Unfortunately, I'm not much of a developer - I only try to compile some programs from its source codes. But that's it. Feed is at

@Reaper:

Thank you very much for your detailed comments! Every day I work with pdaXrom I like it more! Because it comes closes to a "real" Linux system, IMHO. If you know Linux from your desktop PC it is relatively easy to get things done under pdaXrom. For example, I run Xfce4 as a desktop envionment on my C3000 since I also use it on my workstation. And it is absolutely the same look and feel. Amazing.

After all, I always can reflash. I keep "emergency kit" with .conf files, fonts, /etc scripts and alike on my SD card, so restoring my Z after reflashing is a matter of less than an hour, and most of this time is spent at downloading and installing new versions of programs not included.
This is, at the moment, the only thing of concern to me: How will I be able to make an upgrade to the next version of pdaXrom without losing all my individual settings? If you don't mind and if your time allows, could you shortly describe what exactly your "emergency kit" contains? I'm not worried doing some additional tweaking after having installed a new version of pdaXrom, however, I'm just afraid that I will have to do all of my customization again!
Owner of a very happy Zaurus SL-C3000 since the day he was fed with pdaXrom 1.1.0beta1! Just made him even more happy by feeding him with pdaXii13 build 5.4.7.

OK, I'll try to do my best, but don't expect I remember ANYTHING (I don't even for meself )

Usually I copy onto SD card the following dirs:

1) .xmms, .mc and other stuff from /home/root - to keep my plugins, menus and so on;

2) /etc/bluetooth - VERY IMPORTANT! If you don't have this dir, you'll have to reconnect manually every time (link_key file with code from phone will be missing);

3) /etc/ppp - the same, logins/passwords/phone settings;

4) If you use some custom-compile fonts in X (like I don for XMMS) - copy them too, also you can copy fonts.dir not to edit it every time;

5) The last rule: don't keep your distros/data files anywhere except data cards! And duplicate any valueable data! PdaX for now is stable enough but it can ruin even files on SD (move them into lost clusters - I had that more than once), so make more than one copy.
