I'm on my 4th Zaurus - a shiny new 3100, after owning and selling 5500, 6000 & C860.
Still don't know how to use it though....
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=94664\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

that's no problem, send it to me, I'll learn how to use it for you and bring it back in say 6 months and show you how.

That's a really kind offer, I'll think about it and let you know.

Another new to Z UK user here , in Leeds with an SL-5500 and myriad other PDAs from Psion Organiser II upwards  .  Currently have cash sitting in my paypal account, and am looking covetously at a SL-C3100 but have nagging doubts that sharp'll release a new version RSN with larger screen and wifi...

Looks like a Samsung Nexio... 5" 800x480 screen in a decent form factor.  Hope it gives good battery life - the nexio didn't...

I bought an 860 having considered a 3000 and a 1000. between placing the order and it arriving, the 3100 was announced.
I did think it didn't matter too much, because 2GB and bigger SD cards were emerging at the time, so the internal 4GB storage wasn't an issue... but now I've heard they don't work..

so now I'm comtemplating upgrading, but holding back until either a bluetooth/wireless version of the 3100 comes out, or "we" crack the problem of putting bluetooth inside the 3x00/1000 case (see their hardware forums).

we're all dreamers, here at OESF, the current device is never quite good enough, is it?

Amen to that - I keep trying everything...

Recently I've been disappointed with an XDA 2s (HTC Blue Angel) and a Nexio XP30, so I still find myself turning back to the Jornada 720 which has been my companion for quite some time now...  It just works, and works well.  I've come to the conclusion that PDA needs a proper keyboard, and not just a thumbboard or the like, otherwise it just isn't usable.  it also needs a decent OS that doesn't try to hide things away from me.

The 5500 really has piqued my interest, and I am absolutely astounded that it'll run so much stuff.  It's definitely made me think that one of the more expensive clamshell Zs will do what I want it to do, and keep me interested for a while.

I think I'd prefer a device with a disk in it rather than just flash, as then swap becomes a lot more practical without wearing out flash memory.

My only "other" reservation aside from the wifi/bluetooth issue is whether I can use a device that small.  The jornada is about 18cm wide, with a decent size 640x240 screen and an excellent 70% size keyboard with a few mm of travel on it.  This form factor works really well for me, and I'm a tad worried that the screen and keyboard will be too small to be usable if I pony up the money for a SL-C3100.

I don't suppose there's anyone in Leeds with a clamshell Zaurus on this list, is there?

Cheers Simon, my apologies for picking on you - you were the only result that came back from searching the board for "Leeds" that had a clamshell  .
Good luck with the flashing.  I think I'll be sticking with the Sharp based ROMs, as I need to sync to outlook.

Oh dear oh dear oh dear oh dear oh dear.  The clamshell was supposed to be too small, the screen was supposed to be near as damnit illegible and the keyboard was supposed to be useless!

It isn't, is it?  It's spot on, and very usable.

Damn and blast, etc...

Well, balls to waiting, the 5500 is on ebay and will be funding the SL-C3100 when its sold.  I'll probably end up buying from trisoft as they've been exceptionally helpful, and very quick on their response.  Conics have had two queries sent, and have yet to respond despite registering on their system, so I guess it'll be trisoft that gets my business.

Thanks very much to Diesel1 (Simon) for taking the time to come and show me his 860, and enthuse about it.  It's great to find such an active, helpful community.

I think the first meeting of the Northern branch of the UK Zaurus Users Group has just been held, briefly, in the car park of a northern retail park.  Goodness only knows what anyone watching would have thought, especially as it was raining, I had been walking, so the windows misted up pretty quickly.

There'll be beer involved at the next meet.  Beer, gadgets and Linux...  Only curry could make it a perfect night    .  Who knows, I might be able to bring a SL-C3100!

MMMMMMmmmmmm currrrrrry!

Hi chiark,
It was good to meet you, I could've chatted for hours about all things computer.

We must get another meeting of the UKZUG(Northern) organised.  We could do a different car park each time!
I always have my car adapter to recharge the Zs if there are any marathon sessions.

Hopefully we will get better weather next time. (Nice brolly by the way)

Simon.

That brolley is advertising the company that I work for... I ought to be on commission when I carry it

Well, I've cracked already: seeing as this is the northern branch, I took the cheap option and have bought a 760.  The thoughts are that this will tide me over until the replacement for the 3100 is announced, although being realistic I suspect that this'll keep me interested for a long while yet
