Help! Nothing Works!
« on: March 04, 2006, 04:49:42 pm »
I've had my SL-C1000  for a few days now, and I'm trying to install some software packages on it.   However, nothing I've tried so far has worked.

First off, I should mention that I'm no Linux newbie, I've been using Linux for at least 10 years.  So I've resolved the missing library issues and things like that.

But so far, I've installed the following packages

xu4_0.7cvs_arm.ipk
libSDL_1.2.6cvs-1_arm.ipk
zlib_1.1.2_arm.ipk
libSDL-net_1.2.5cvs-1_arm.ipk
MaxMame-1.2.tar.gz
libSDL-mixer_1.2.5cvs-1_arm.ipk
libSDL-image_1.2.3-1_arm.ipk
heretic-engine_1.0.4-2_arm.ipk
heretic-demo_1.2-3_arm.ipk

So, xu4 seems to only corrupt the screen, not do anything useful

heretic started loading.  I only got a white screen.  I could here all the heretic sounds as though a heretic demo game was playing, but I never saw the graphics.  I also could not figure out how to quit it, I ended up having to yank the battery (where is the ESC key on these things?)

MaxMame, I set up a file structure on an SD card, similar to what I have for my PC, I copied some roms over, edited the advmame.rc to point to this structure.  When I try to run a game, it tells me it can't find the roms (how do I even know it's reading the advmame.rc?)  Worse, it freezes my terminal session so I have to kill it and start another.

I should point out that I'm using the Sharp rom, because I haven't figured out which other rom to switch to (if any).   Are these packages incompatible with the Sharp ROM?  How can I tell for sure?

I was really looking forward to the Z, but I'm getting discouraged with it.

I'm hoping it's a package incompatibility issue, and someone can tell me where I went wrong.    I think the main problem is these packages seem to lack any kind of Z-related documentation/release notes to help you get started.

Try another version of libsdl. I use this:

Package: libsdl
Status: install ok installed
Root: /
Version: 1.2.5-bvdd-07-2

Optimized for bvdd and with joystick support.

Give to us your feedback.

I replaced my SDL with the one you suggested, but still nothing that uses it seems to work.  xu4 now segfaults instead of giving a corrupted screen.   I also installed a couple more programs that require SDL, and they fail to run too.

A few programs give this error:
SlSharedManager: can't get proc entry

Some complain about missing symbols, or just crash quietly.

the bvdd sdl wont work without installing the bvdd module first.

anyway, to get heretic working, i used the following packages:

What's exactly is the bvdd?   Is that version of SDL more optimized for the Zaurus than other versions of SDL?

I guess my question is if I'd be better off getting the bvdd module working, or trying yet another version of SDL?

bvdd is to optimize video in sl-c1k, 3k and 3k1. Try "modprobe bvdd".

Oh! I forget... You need to update your instalation with tetsu kernel, at least, or use cacko, etc.

Is there anywhere I can read more about bvdd?  Optimized video is something I'd like to have eventually.

For right now, I'm just trying to get those games working with the stock Sharp rom so I'll give libsdl_1.2.5-slzaurus20050731_arm a try.

ditch that sharp rom, get cacko on it. that knows more but it is exactly like the sharp rom. if you want to get experimental later, you can still try other roms later. hope that helps

I installed the sdl version that meanie suggested, and heretic works.   A few other things still don't, or only "kind of" work (atari800z).

I accidentally hit a key that sent heretic into the background.   I could here it still running, but I couldn't figure out how to bring it back into the foreground.  I supposed I could kill it from a terminal, but is there a better way to bring an app like that back into the foreground?

Also atari800z drew some graphics on the screen, and "took over".  I couldn't figure out how to exit it (other than yank the battery).   Is there a trick to killing an app like that so I don't have to resort to battery removal?

I do want to upgrade to cacko or maybe OZ at some point, I haven't decided which.   I have some questions about each that I haven't seen an answer to yet.

cacko is good but it still has some annoying bugs.  I think he should stick with the original sharp rom until he is used to it.

Now, I used the sdl libs from that all in one snes emulator package.  Works for me.  Just search the forums for snes9x and you will find it.
