How To Change Font Size In Opera?
« on: March 07, 2006, 07:06:32 pm »
I love Opera but it's irritating to have to scale the graphics whenever I want to increase the size of fonts in web pages.

I looked at the ~/.opera/opera6.ini and tried changing values in it but they're just ignored.

Is there a file somewhere else that has the font setting?

I also tried making the opera.ini file not writeable by the zaurus user but to no avail. It just deletes it and makes another one with the old 6pt font size.

I then tried chowning the .opera directory to root and giving it ownership of opera.ini but it still didn't work, although the edited file is still there at least.

I'm almost sure that Japanese websites offer a lot of very useful Zaurus tools.
It would be so good if anyone knowing Japanese and English would browse the sites and collect the useful links... or if more Japanese users would be active here, so they can help out with Japanese tools.

I know that from before, when I used the HP 200LX: Many of the best programs and hardware upgrades were developed in Japan and were only available on Japanese sites, so the remaining world not capable of reading Japanese does not even know about these gems.

Automatic translation does only a part of the job: It is still hard to _find_ the stuff via google & co. Oonce you have found it, translating roughly in order to find out what it is about is not the big problem.

I'm pretty sure you'll end up with mojibake (those garbled square block characters), but here's a brief rundown:

First you need to install the "Qtopia Shell Bridge Dialog" (whatever that means):
[a href=\"http://tbox.jpn.org/misc/dl.cgi?file=qshdlg_0.6.2-1_arm.ipk]http://tbox.jpn.org/misc/dl.cgi?file=qshdlg_0.6.2-1_arm.ipk (obtained from http://tbox.jpn.org/wiki/linuzau/wiki.cgi?qshdlg )

Then install the opera7-jpn helper:
http://www014.upp.so-net.ne.jp/boxer-j/fil...0.2a_qshdlg.ipk (obtained from http://www014.upp.so-net.ne.jp/boxer-j/ )

Then make sure you uncheck the VGA compatible mode, then start up the helper utility. It should look like this (notwithstanding the mojibake):

[img]http://slzaurus.seesaa.net/image/20050501-s-opera7-002.png\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /]

The utility screen is divided into top and bottom halves. The bottom half gives you 5 setup items that you can adjust:
Font size setup
"Magnification/reduction ratio on startup" setup
User Agent setup
Document Mode setup
Proxy setup

The top half shows you the current setting as well as confirmation dialogs for the settings that you have changed.

To change the font size, select the first setup item and tap OK:

[img]http://slzaurus.up.seesaa.net/image/20051030-s-opera-003.png\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /]

The following image shows the current font size, you can see the "Height=16" at the top half of the screen. The bottom half shows all the selectable font sizes:

[img]http://slzaurus.up.seesaa.net/image/20051030-s-opera-004.png\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /]

Try changing the font size to 24; select it and tap OK.
You can now see last line of the top screen >"Height=24"  which confirms the new font size setting.

[img]http://slzaurus.up.seesaa.net/image/20051030-s-opera-006.png\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /]

Lastly, exit the utility by tapping Cancel, and start up Opera.

btw the "enlargement/reduction on startup" setup item is the same function as "Scale page" slider bar inside Opera. The difference is it remembers the scale setting.
With the default Opera,  the scale setting goes back to 100% on exit.
(and "magnification" is probably a more accurate term, I've corrected it )

You should ask qbert and cmonex.
They're the ones who requested it, the least they could do is try it and report back on the results.
