When Will Pdaxrom Move Out Of Beta?
« on: April 14, 2006, 10:17:12 am »
Hi
I'm considering getting a zaurus and I've become very interested in running pdaXrom. It's amazing to think of running programs like the gimp and freeciv smoothly on a pda. I did notice however that pdaXrom is still in beta. When are we going to see a final version announced, and is there any danger associated with running the current beta on my zaurus. I don't plan on overclocking. Can I load all of the packages on my zaurus via SD and install like that? I don't plan on using my Zaurus on the internet, at least initally.

Thanks,

Matthew

I'm not by any means a spokes person for pdaXrom... but just a user that supports this outstanding OS.... So keep in mind that this is just my 2 cents...

In the eyes of a typical OS user (Unix, Linux, Windoze, Mac OS)... You see a Beta as buggy, unstable, problematic... The thing you have to understand is that when it comes to typical OS being installed on a PC, you have a lot of variables... like Motherboard, Soundcard, Video Card, USB chipset, NIC, Processor, etc... all different types of hardware combos that havent all been tested. When it comes to our units... they are for the most part pretty standard across the board in 3 different releases... we have the c1/3xxx... the c7/8xx... and the 6/5xxx models... Each new release is made for each flavor... When running pXr on one of these devices... you will not have a (MAJOR)problem with *stock* hardware compatibility... because you wont run into hardware combo issues...  I think releases are more of a "CURRENT" release than a beta... almost like a "Hot off the press" release... with bug fixes and majority user requests...

Running pXr on your Z will run fine and be basicly problem free...

Yes installing apps directly from SD is perfect for installing apps... via direct install of the ipk... or setting up a mini repository on your SD...

Also when you do decide to run internet on your Zaurus (Which will you will VERY soon)

Come back and check out the different models of Wireless, Wired, and/or Dial Up modems avaliable via our Wiki before making any sudden purchase...

If any one views my opinion as wrong or invalid... let me know... I'm just becoming a post-aholic in recent days...

I wouldn't say the gimp runs smoothly. It's a hog. For straightforward image cropping and colour adjustments I use mtpaint, it's extremely fast and useable. I still keep the gimp around just in case I might need it. The best thing about pdaXrom is all the full blown apps that you can run: mozilla, firefox, sylpheed, openoffice etc etc.

I've been running pdaXrom since last November and have gone through 2 upgrades (just upgraded to 1.1.0beta3), I have never had any major problems. It is certainly more stable than my Asus running crappy wince. Back when I still actually used the thing it would hang almost everyday, requiring a soft reset.

Yup, you're free to choose where to installl the packages (SD, CF, HDD, even usb attached devices).

to me... beta.. here...means that things may not work, and that things may change.

of course, those things that do work -- work very very well.

That is, you can compile, develop and run programs... and those will be rock solid.

You want key mappings to suite your needs and have a nice gui interface to set
it up and have all that integrated into the os release? well... maybe not.

For me -- the beta is not a thing that would prevent me from using the zaurus, the
os ... or from upgrading (releases, etc).

There *was* a big change regading libraries (floating point libs?) around beta1
rc5 ... but after that, the changes have not been so intrusive.
