Compatible Sl-5000 Programs?
« on: May 08, 2006, 03:05:25 pm »
My new Zaurus arrived Saturday morning (yay!!! my Axim can go on eBay now) and I have been busy assembling the programs I think I'll use most often.  Is there a list anywhere that shows which older programs work with the clamshell Zs? I've been going mainly to http://www.killefiz.de to look around.

One program called Shufflewords is behaving very badly, locking up on me, zsoduku won't install at all and Qpdf only starts in portrait mode and supposedly there is a Rotate somewhere - the icon on the side like an open book?

How long does the average non-linux-geek wait before trying other roms?  While I often try out live Linux distros, I don't really know what each one is best at and use Win2k at home, XP, VMS and Solaris Unix at work.  I want to be able to use perl, emacs, bash, tcl and sqlite with Firefox and Freecell.  I do watch videos a few times a week on my Axim but A/V needs aren't the major factor.  I also have a CF wifi card I need to pull out and try but that can wait if need be.  I'd say scripting is the biggest thing for me right now.

I'm also a little scared about how fragile the screen connector feels.  Any hints to avoid trouble later on?

Thanks,

Terry

p.s. I haven't been this happy with a pda since my HP 100LX!

Yes - this is exactly what I need, thanks! - although it's a bit overwhelming, isn't it?  I've been wanting this pda for so long because of the form factor, I didn't think too much about setting up the software.  At least it isn't like moving from Palm to PocketPC and having to pay and pay and pay again for all the programs I already owned.

I was also blown away by Conics - ordered middle of the week from Japan and the post lady was at my door 10:00 am Saturday in Iowa.  Faster than Amazon free shipping by days.  Wow.

If a different rom had more of the basics I want, then I might go for it, but it seems best to just play around with the (hideously ugly) Qtopia destop. It might not be so bad if there was a way to grayscale the garish colors. :-)

Actually, I'd love to have a green-screen retro theme from my old AS/400 days.  That would be fun.  Programs first, themes second.  I guess I know what I'll be doing the rest of the month.

Thanks again for the great starting page.

Terry

p.s. Did anyone ever have a backup of the mmhart page that had the Cocoa Basic port on it?  The site seems gone now.

Some very nice wallpapers - I loved several of the clean, elegant ones, although I have to say my husband might enjoy a few of the selections more than I would.  I don't have anything against nudes (and the artwork is excellent) but their place probably isn't on the average pda in a professional environment.

I'll look through the video stuff this weekend.  I have an assortment of CF cards so I can experiment a bit.

:-) The Linux community is always interesting, though.
