Questions About Installation
« on: June 26, 2006, 12:07:51 am »
Hello All,

First off, I am completely new to Linux.  I decided that I wanted to give it a try so I picked up an SL-6000L.  Anyway, I loaded pdaXrom, and have finally figured out the wifi.  :-)

On to my question... I have a couple of feeds in Package Manager.  My first installation was AbiWord.  Very idiot proof.  I clicked, and it installed.  Ive been attempting to install firefox, but when I do, I get no icons.  Is there something I need to do in console to get this working?  Thinking it might just be firefox, I tried to install a crossword program, with the same results.  The package manager shows the package to be installed, but I don't know how to access it.

Also, I was able to get my Belkin IR keyboard going with the original sharp rom, but am at a loss with pdaXrom.  Any advice?

I apologise for such green questions... but i've searched and searched to no avail.

Thanks,
Kim

Hi there

Sounds like you're on to it so far. I presume you are installing to a card? If not, you have probably run out of space. Otherwise, try running the program by typing 'firefox' in a terminal to see if it installed successfully or not.

Try [a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=15484&hl=belkin]this thread[/url] for the keyboard - I don't have one myself. Note that the forum search is a bit strange; you can only type in one word...!

Welcome and good luck!

Hi,

You don't have to sorry, be happy!  You have what I consider the best PDA ever
made!  I think the window manager (called openbox) needs to be restarted, in
order to see the new icons.  There may be a way to "reload" them, but I don't
too much about openbox.

Anway, just click "Exit" on the menu to shutdown the window manager, and then
when you get back to the "# " prompt in the text console, type "startx" to restart
the window manager.  (Actually you have just shutdown and restarted the X Server
and the window manager when you perform these actions).

The icons should show up...

Questions About Installation

Did you happen to (like I did at first) install pdaXrom on the 6000 directly
after running the original (Sharp) ROM?  If so, yeh, you are probably out
of space.

I just saw Karlto's post...

Anyway, there is a thread about installing for the 6000, I believe it has the
word "tutorial" in it.  It involves NAND-restoring a Guyhelm ROM which
also re-partitions the 6000's flash in a way that should give you about
28MB of free space after you then install pdaXrom.

Pardon me for saying it, but it's a little tough to get "properly" started as the
docs, home page, etc. are "a little tough" in this regard.

And the 6000 itself is a little wierd in regard to getting it to boot after some
operations.  You must take the battery out for a while, etc., and although
the machine might appear dead and won't power on as expected, in the
end it will.

Questions About Installation

Hey Guys!  Thanks for the response.  I did install the Guyhelm ROM before the pdaXrom, so actual internal memory isn't an issue.  And you're correct, i'm installing to a CF card.  I tried the reboot / startx with no results.  As suggested, I typed firefox in console, and I got a "command not found."  So i guess this means I've got this installed incorrectly.  The version I used came from a pdaXrom feed.  I'll keep looking..

ok.. you guys were right.  originally I didn't install the right version, which has since been corrected, and now shows up after a reboot.

On another note, I must say that I am enjoying the challenges of learning Linux, and this forum is a great help!

Thanks!
Kim
