High-capcity Battery For Sl-5500
« on: August 09, 2006, 02:35:56 pm »
Hey folks - I'm pretty new to the Zaurus arena but assume getting less than 45 minutes from a stock batter fully charged is not normal.

Does anyone know of a high-capacity battery available for the SL-5500 - I see some 1100Mah batteries on eBay (as mentioned here in another topic) but is there anything with a high-capacity???

I'd love to get some info from those of you who have the knowledge before I purchase a new battery!

Thanks for your assistance.

I've had a SL-5500 for a couple years (also have a C1000).
Anyway, I average about an hour on the 5500 using a wireless card and max brightness.
The original battery BL06 is 850Mah so 1100 should be a little better (how much, who knows).
The SL-5500 is a terrible power consumption hog.

Since I got my C1000, I've been very amazed with its power consumption.
It has a BL11 battery which is 1800Mah.
I can run it for several hours on a charge using wireless off and on and with brightness at next to the lowest level.

This battery is a lot thicker than the 5500 battery, but I've read (can't remember where offhand) that you can get a special battery cover to accomodate that type battery on a 5500.
You may or may not want to do that because then the z wouldn't lay level.

Hope this helps you some.

It also wouldn't fit in a standard Docking Cradle.

You can modify a nokia battery (Nokia Ref. BL-5C) to work in a 5500, it means making a little bit of packaging. . But they're 3.7V 850mAh, so they're fine to use.

If you don't mind a bit of hacking, it is possible to make a digital camera battery fit.  I bought a 1800mAh unit from 7dayshop, hacked off the plastic case and made some new contacts with copper tape.  Although it's a few mm thicker than the original, and stops the back cover from being refitted, it was possible to hack the cradle to allow it to fit and stays on through the tightness of the fit.  Have had over 3hrs with active wifi connection and full backlight, and over 8hrs idling.

Just out of curiousity: which battery was the one you used supposed to be compatible with?

I did more or less the same, but with an EN-EL5 (IIRC Nikon)-compatible 1100 mAh battery quite some time ago now. Still works like a charm.

Chris.

This one: [a href=\"http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_3&products_id=99199]http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_in...oducts_id=99199[/url]

The width and depth match the Sharp one perfectly, but it's a few mm higher.
Steps are:
1. Hack off plastic case (carefully!)
2. wrap bare battery is masking tape.
3. Make templates to bring contacts from top of battery to bottom, as they are in a different order from the Sharp battery.
4. cut a thin strip of doublew-sided sticky foam and stick to the bottom of the battery.  This should be short enough to sit under the case when the battery is inserted into the Zaurus
5. Cut out template in copper tape, and solder to existing contacts.
6. Wrap the exposed copper in more masking tape.

The battery will be held in by the double-sided foam and the tightness of the fit.

Easy!

Obviously, charging will take a long time.

I just came across an item today in ebay Germany that maybe you guys will find interesting (I did).  A 1800mAh batt!  I could not believe this would fit into the SL-5500, but the seller explicitly confirmed this.  Ebay Item number is 270037098941, seller name    akkumulator-manufaktur.  I have not ordered this battery and I do not know the seller.

A little late to post, but anyway I bought a couple of these, modified them, and it turns out they are only 1800mAh on the sticker. The batteries only give the life you would expect from one of that size.
