Gpe Mini-browser

Last time I tried GPE there were two big things not working for me- the GUI package manager was broke with no search function and GPE-minibrowser was nigh on useless as I couldn't access Yahoo! mail which is sometimes the only site I'll check. I would presume from that that it also cannot handle Hotmail and Gmail either yet.

I was speaking to Florian about this and he said no work had been done on the minibrowser recently. I'm sure most will agree that e-mail is in the top 2 uses of a computer for most people so I would say that getting this working should be a priority for the GPE team.

Or perhaps because the GPE devs are not all Zaurus users. Keep in mind that GPE was originally developed by iPaq Linux community.

Don't get me wrong, I like and use GPE. But I wouldn't go bashing the Qtopia folks. I've tried OZ 3.5.4.1 with both GPE and OPIE and from a usability standpoint, OPIE is still the hands-down winner. And from a developer's standpoint, I'd rather code a Qt app than a GTK+ app any day. Hopefully the GPE devs don't all have the "Qtopia sux" attitude ... that's a good way to drive off the more rational, open-minded members of the community.

Actually the "gtk sux" attitude drove the gpe people away from here. That's where my comment about qtopia fanboys stems from.

huh,  seems to me like there's been much more interest in X/GTK zaurus stuff for at least the past year.  openbsd uses gtk, right? and pdaxrom?  and OZ/GPE seems to have gotten a lot of attention lately.  I confess to a sincere dislike of the gpe package manager on the zaurus, and a tendency to drop back to cacko if I get stuck in OZ or pdaxrom, but that isn't reaaly a qt vs gtk thing--it is usually a networking, config  or peripheral support thing that needs an immediate fix to accomlish some particular task.

I'm kinda with adf on this one. I've been on this forum a long time and I can't say that I've ever seen widespread bashing of GPE/GTK. Naturally there have been comparisons to Qtopia and I think that even the GPE devs would have to admit that early versions were pretty weak ... after all they were early versions done by volunteers being compared to a heavyweight commercially backed toolkit. But if you're gonna start an open source project that "competes" with an established player, then you gotta expect that it will take a bunch of releases before you're even close to catching up and that during that time you'll have some disappointed users.

Now, have there been a lot of folks who like Qtopia and don't want to give it up for GPE? Sure. And many of them have really good reasons (other than GTK sux). If I were a GPE dev, I'd want to hear those reasons so I'd know what to improve, but maybe I'm just too much of a customer focused commercial developer to really get into the open source developer mindset. Never the less, the apparent hatred that some factions in the Zaurus community have towards other factions will just never make any sense to me.

This is the first time I hear about the "gtk sux" thing. Maybe I have not been around long enough. However, most users don't really care whether their distro is based on QT/GTK/blah blah blah. BUT what really matters is how good it looks and how responsive and easy to use it is. The other important thing is to have useful applications which leads us back to having a useful and responsive browser. gpe-mini browser seems to be an attempt for doing this, but unfortunately, it is a fair way from that ultimate goal to have a fully featured and working browser that loads and runs quickly. At the moment gpe-mini browser seems to be en par with dillo2 in rendering basic html.

May you should state this in OZ release notes. OESF Forum is popular with users. Subscribing to a (developers') mailing list or using bugtrackers is usually not the first user will try, not if google finds a (user) forum.

My experience is that people who use forums neither read release notes nor use any type of search (be it the forum search of google).

My experience is that they do. It's how we find the forum in the first place. it's not like "www.oesf.org/forums" is engraved into the back of every Zaurus manufactured.
