Fast CF cards?
« on: March 16, 2004, 01:45:33 am »
I am shopping for a new compact flash card and I would like to know what the fastest usable speed is for my Zaurus 5500.

I am currently using a 128M Transcend card that has nothing special on the face and the following on the edge:
76985 KTN3 128MCP  0330 QC:65
I am not sure what the speed is, but I bought it as higher than normal speed about half a year ago. I have had no problems with it, execpt that I have not figured out what combination of things to do with pdisk and mkfs to be able to flash from it. Putting my qpzidian dictionary file on it makes that translation dictionary work much faster than putting the database on the 256M
Sandisk SD card.

Cards I am looking at are 65x Sandisk, 45x Transcend, 40x Lexar,  and 40x Ridata.

Does anyone have information on these cards? Are there limmits to my Zaurus that mean I should be looking at cheaper slower cardl?
I am using OZ 3.3.5 if that makes a difference, or if there is something I can do with it to optimize speed.
SL5500  OZ3.5.2 (Opie), Dvorak built in keyboard
Spectrum24 Ethernet
SanDisk 256 ext2 (AR0401RF China) SD
Lexar 256 VFAT (P/N 2260, Rev. A), Transcend 128 ext2 CF
Pismo, Cube, 8600, Gentoo PowerPC, YellowDog

Take a look at my speed tests here:-

The faster cards will not give you faster throughput than your current card, particularly on a 5500.

by all means buy a fast cf card for future compatibilty or for use in other devices/card reader in pc etc, but don\'t expect it to go any faster than your current cf card.

I don\'t think this kernel setting is availible for oz yet either.
